Marquette golf teams finish off 3-meet week

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School golf teams had some good finishes at a trio of meets last week.

The boys won all three of their meets, and actually at two of them their toughest competition came from the Marquette No. 2 team.

The Sentinels girls took part in two meets, taking third and second at a pair of Great Northern Conference meets.

Here are details:

MSHS boys

Easton Aho was medalist by three strokes with a nine-hole total of 33 at a GNC meet hosted by Marquette on May 4. He had two birdies in his round.

A trio of golfers were next with 36, each coming from the pair of Sentinels teams. Boden Moore from the No. 1 team shot 36, as did a pair of golfers from the No. 2 squad, Jack Pond and Lake Skytta.

In addition, Seve Swanson on the No. 1 team tied for fifth with 38, while Pavel McCutcheon from No. 1 tied for 10th with 40.

Head coach Ben Smith noted that seven of the nine participating Marquette golfers shot 40 or better.

Marquette No. 1 won with 146 with Marquette No. 2 carding 157. Escanaba was third with 164 and Gladstone fourth with 165 as other team scores weren’t available.

On Thursday at another nine-hole meet at Escanaba, Marquette No. 1 won a narrow three-stroke decision over MSHS No. 2, 151-154. Escanaba was third with 159 and Kingsford fourth with 164, other team scores unavailable.

Moore was medalist at this meet with 35, while Pond was second with 37 as both were on Marquette No. 1. Maverick Moore and Skytta, each on the No. 2 team, were among a four-way tie for third with 38. Dylan Pond from No. 2 tied for seventh with 39, while Caleb Aho from No. 1 was 13th with 40.

Smith again noted seven Sentinels shot 40 or better.

At an 18-hole meet in Munising on Friday, Marquette again won with 313, though other team scores weren’t available. Aho was second with 76, shooting a nifty 34 on the back nine that he started with four birdies in the first five holes after shooting 42 on the front nine. Moore was third with 77, while the Sentinels’ Colton Hartz fourth with 78, and teammates Ethan Jensen and Henrik Rhoades tied for ninth with 82.

MSHS placed third on Monday on its home course with 228. Led by medalist Kamrie Scott with 45, Escanaba also won the team title with 205 as Kingsford was second with 218 and Menominee fourth with 232.

Delanie Rhoades paced Marquette, tying for seventh with 55, while other Sentinels’ scores included Hayden Schetter ninth with 56, Kylie Smith tied for 10th with 58 and Elise Busick tied for 13th with 59.

On Thursday at Escanaba, the Sentinels shot 197 to finish second. Esky again won with 192, while Kingsford was third with 216 and Menominee fourth with 221.

Rhoades was part of a three-way tie for medalist with Escanaba’s Scott and Menominee’s Lexi Marineau, each shooting 44. No indication was given whether a tiebreaker was used to come up with a single medalist.

Schetter was sixth with 48, Smith tied for seventh with 50 and Laine Hruska 13th with 55.
