NEGAUNEE — Negaunee’s offense wound up a big spring and let it loose for three dozen runs in a doubleheader sweep of Westwood at home on Monday.

The Miners posted 17-2 and 19-3 victories to improve to 13-8 this season. Westwood slipped to 4-5, according to a schedule listed on the MHSAA website, www.mhsaa.com.

After having a doubleheader at Calumet canceled on Tuesday, Negaunee was set for another twinbill at Gladstone on Thursday. Following that, the Miners have this weekend off before doubleheaders scheduled at Jeffers at 4 p.m. Monday, home against Kingsford at 4 p.m. Wednesday and home again against Escanaba at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Westwood has a doubleheader scheduled for noon Saturday at Sault Ste. Marie, with a pair of twinbills next week — at 4 p.m. EDT Monday hosting Iron Mountain and at 4 p.m. Thursday at Gwinn. A previous double-dip at Calumet on Wednesday has been canceled.

In the opener on Monday, Alyse Robar not only earned the pitching win, going all three innings on the rubber, but led Negaunee batters as she went 3 for 3, including a first-inning double and second-inning home run.

Robar gave up two runs — just one earned — on two hits and three walks while striking out seven. Sami Ruby absorbed the loss for the Patriots, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing 17 runs on 19 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Miners jumped on the scoreboard with seven runs in the first inning that included an Ainsley Brunette two-run triple, Cassie Feys RBI triple, Robar and Delaney Gladwell RBI doubles, and Rheana Nelson and Natalie Pantti RBI singles.

Robar’s two-run homer to left field was the big blow in a three-run second as Pantti had another RBI single.

Pantti and teammate Kylie Cardoni each hit two-run singles in the third, the same inning that Brunette had an RBI triple and the Miners’ Megan Marker an RBI double.

Pantti finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while Nelson, Brunette, Feys, Marker and Olivia Richards each had two hits.

Westwood’s Kaylin Doney and Lyn Magnuson each collected a hit.

In the nightcap, Brunette earned this pitching win, going all three innings while giving up three runs — all unearned — while not allowing a hit and just one walk as she fanned five.

The Patriots’ Anika Ruspakka went two innings, allowing 16 runs on 10 hits and 10 walks as she had one K.

Feys and Brielle Anderson led Negaunee batters, each getting four hits, while Richards had two hits and Gladwell drew three walks and stole two bases.

Anderson, who finished with five RBIs, hit a run-scoring single in the opening inning, an RBI double and RBI single both in the second, then a two-run single in the third.

The biggest inning was the second, when 10 runs came across. In addition to Anderson’s big hits, Pantti and Cardoni each hit two-run singles, Feys an RBI double and RBI single, and Brunette an RBI triple.
