Dewitt cracks 5 hits in Sentinels’ softball sweep

MARQUETTE — Eva Dewitt collected five hits to support teammates Charlye Swajanen and Makayla Gustafson, who got the complete-game pitching victories, as the Marquette Senior High School softball team swept Kingsford in a doubleheader played Thursday in Marquette.

The Sentinels have one more regular-season doubleheader remaining, at home against Menominee at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, before playing in the MHSAA Division 1 district tournament at Traverse City West next Saturday. MSHS faces Alpena at noon in the opener, with a win in that game putting Marquette in the district championship immediately after at 2 p.m. against either host TC West or against TC Central.

Here are details vs. Kingsford:

In the opener, Dewitt went 3 of 4, hitting doubles in the first and fifth innings while adding a single in the third.

Swajanen went all seven innings on the rubber, allowing six runs — but just two earned — on nine hits and two walks as she struck out five.

Mya Brunswick absorbed the loss for Kingsford, going all six innings and allowing 10 runs, five of them earned on 13 hits and a walk as she fanned six.

The Flivvers tied it in the third after a pair of MSHS errors, taking the lead in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk that made it 3-2.

But Marquette put its stamp on the final result with a six-run fourth, the big blow Trapani’s two-run double, then added its final two runs in the fifth for a 10-3 lead.

Jazzlyne Shaughnessy led KHS with three hits.
