Biggest meet draws near: Negaunee tunes up for U.P. Finals with sweep of county track

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee got in an excellent tuneup for this weekend’s MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals when both the Miners’ boys and girls track and field teams scored decisive victories at the Marquette County Meet held at the NHS track on Tuesday.

The Negaunee girls piled up nearly twice as many points as the other four teams combined, scoring 214 points to 73 for runner-up Marquette. Westwood was third with 28, while Ishpeming had 21 and Gwinn 8.

In the boys meet, the Miners won by more than 50 with 148 points, the Sentinels second with 90, while Westwood had 78, Ishpeming 11 and Gwinn 6.

Republic-Michigamme didn’t score in either meet.

The U.P. Finals in all divisions will include athletes who qualified out of regionals two weeks ago. It will be held at Kingsford starting at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday.

Here are details from the Marquette County Meet:

Girls meet

Negaunee won 12 of the 17 events, including all four relays and four of the five field events.

Leading the way individually was the Miners’ Sadie Rogers, who accounted for three victories. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.09 seconds, a victory of nearly 1 3/4 seconds, and ran with the victorious 400 relay in 50.47 and 1,600 relay in 4:04.32.

Keira Waterman was also in both those relays, while Izzy Francisco and Elvera Coyne were in the 400 relay and Nori Korsman and Josie Mechling on the 1,600 relay.

Mechling also won the 300 hurdles in 51.94 seconds, while teammate Brynn Wieciech took the 400 in 1:03.28 and Adelyn Chapman the 3,200 in 13:47.44.

Wieciech also ran with the 800 relay winners in 1:51.98 with Francisco, Addie Dank and Elvera Coyne, while Chapman added a triumph in the 3,200 relay in 11:08.79 — a victory of 36 seconds — as she was joined by Clare O’Donnell, Aleana Park and Liliana Saunders.

In field events for Negaunee, Coyne won the high jump by clearing 5 feet even, Korsman the pole vault by making it over at 10-feet even — a victory of 2 1/2 feet — Paige O’Donnell the shot put with a heave of 31-9, and Priya Morey the discus with a toss of 98-10.

The Miners had numerous other point producers, including a half-dozen runners-up — Morey in the shot put, Waterman in the long jump, Saunders in the high jump, Coyne in the 100, Mechling in the 100 hurdles and Eliza Sicotte in the 3,200.

Jordyn Anthony led Marquette with a pair of victories, winning the 100 in 13.15 seconds — just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Negaunee’s Coyne — and 200 in 27.19.

The Sentinels’ Ana Cantway won the 1,600 in 5:45.89, an almost 35-second triumph, while Taylen Todd took the long jump with a leap of 17-4 1/2.

Other top-three medalists for MSHS were Brynn Autio, second in the discus and third in the shot put; Eva Nystrom, second in the 200; Keira Daugherty, second in the 400; Etta Kudej, second in the 300 hurdles; Sophie Hausmann, second in the pole vault; and Amira Perrier, third in the pole vault.

Westwood got a victory from Ava Gobert in the 800 in 2:41.85, while teammate Addelyn Hallum was fourth in the 200. The Patriots were also runners-up in the 800 and 3,200 relays.

Ishpeming was paced by Sophie Mahoski as runner-up in both the 800 and 1,600, while Nora Jo Anderson was third in the high jump, losing second place on a tiebreaker.

Gwinn was led by Alexa Jakubowski placing fourth in the 300 hurdles, fifth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the long jump, along with teammate Alayna Soyring coming in fifth in the 400.

R-M’s top finish was by Zoe Blubaugh when she was eighth in the 100 hurdles.

Boys meet

The Miners were nearly as dominant in this meet, winning nine events, including three relays and four field events.

Negaunee’s Derek McEachern was a three-time victor, taking the 200 in 23.66 seconds and running with the triumphant 800 relay in 1:36.70 and 1,600 relay in 3:48.87.

Blayne LaCosse was also on both those winning relays, with Marshall Peters and Evan Asikainen joining the 800 relay and Aaron Maki and Jace Collins the 1,600 relay.

Ethan Gauthier doubled up in the field, taking the shot put with a heave of 44-4 1/2 and discus with a throw of 136-11, while Henry Plummer won the 3,200 in 10:44.75 and ran with the 3,200 relay winners in 9:06.35, joining Quin Karlstrom, Anders Johnson and Simon Jaklin.

Teammate Cole Prusi won the long jump with a leap of 20-2, while Cole Pekrul took the high jump by clearing 5-10.

Runners-up for the Miners were McEachern in the 400, Prusi in the 300 hurdles, Nash Barabe in the shot put and Elijah Nicholas in the high jump, as Negaunee was also second in the 400 relay.

Placing third for NHS were Asikainen in the 100 and 200, Prusi in the 110 hurdles and high jump, Barabe in the discus and Tyler Rautiola in the 3,200.

Marquette picked up five victories on the track, Oliver Kudej winning the 100 in 11.75, Jacob Norman the 110 hurdles in 15.99, Lucas Ballard the 400 in 51.07, Welly Fillmore the 800 in 2:02.59 and William Lindsay the 1,600 in 4:56.81.

The Sentinels added five runner-up placements, Norman in the 100, Kudej in the 200, Lindsay in the 800, Nathan Cattoor in the discus and James Goodwin in the long jump.

And coming in third for MSHS was Cattoor in the shot put, Beepsee Teeple in the long jump and 400, and Clayton Edwards in the 300 hurdles.

Westwood picked up a trio of victories, two each by Karter Scherer and Louis Salmi after they joined Ellis King and Jaks Williams in winning the 400 relay in 46.46 seconds. Scherer also triumphed in the 300 hurdles in 44.37, while Salmi was victorious in the pole vault with 13-9, a win by more than three feet.

Scherer was also runner-up in the 110 hurdles, while teammate Calvin Carlson was second in the 3,200, and the Patriots were runners-up in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Carlson added third in the 1,600, the same place taken by Jared Waterman in the 800, while in fourth was Waterman in the 1,600, Gavin Comero in the pole vault and Will LeClair in the discus.

Topping out for Ishpeming was Kemper Gearhart finishing runner-up in the 1,600, fifth in the 800 and seventh in the 400. Teammate Mateusz Wozniak was third in the pole vault, while Josh Wojie was sixth in the 400 and Darius Weber sixth in the long jump.

Gwinn was led by Rylee Jones’ runner-up finish in the pole vault, while teammate Andrew Soules was sixth in the 100 and seventh in the 200.

And R-M just missed scoring when Brenden Mattila placed seventh in the discus.
