Sentinels score narrow wins for softball sweep at Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Marquette Senior High School scored a pair of close victories for a high school softball doubleheader sweep at Kingsford on Thursday, winning 6-5 and 5-3.

After hosting Superior Central on Friday, the Sentinels are next scheduled to host Westwood for a twinbill at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Here are details from Kingsford:

Marquette 6, Kingsford 5

In the opener, Charlye Swajanen picked up the pitching victory, going all seven innings while giving up five runs — but only one earned run — on five hits and one walk as she struck out nine. Flivvers counterpart Mya Brunswick also went all seven innings, allowing six runs, though only one earned, on 10 hits and a walk as she K’d nine.

Lauren Johnson led MSHS batters, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, as Swajanen also had three hits. Teammate Maddy Havel added two hits as Ava Hanford notched two steals.

The Sentinels got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the third that included a Swajanen RBI single. But Kingsford went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the inning as Karly Trevillian hit a two-run single with an error scoring another.

Then the visitors retook the lead in the fifth after Swajanen and Johnson RBI singles.

Marquette 5, Kingsford 3

In the nightcap, Makayla Gustafson got the pitching victory, going six innings as she allowed three runs, though just one earned, on four hits and three walks as she fanned five. Swajanen relieved for one shutout inning, allowing a hit but not a walk.

Trevillian took the loss for the Flivvers, going all seven as she allowed five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out five.

Johnson, Havel and Eva Dewitt each had two hits for the winners, while teammate Lily Smigiel had one hit but also two RBIs. Kailey Matuszewski led Kingsford with a hit and RBI.

Marquette again opened the scoring in the top of the third, getting two runs on a Dewitt fielder’s choice RBI and Sammy Trapani getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
