Sentinels, Miners get tennis wins; Patriots split

ISHPEMING — Westwood split a pair of high school boys tennis meets earlier this week, defeating Ishpeming a day after falling to Marquette.

Meanwhile, Negaunee improved its early season record to 3-0-1 with a victory over Gwinn.

In area matches scheduled for this afternoon, Westwood hosts Negaunee while Munising is at Escanaba, both set for 4 p.m.

The Patriots are also scheduled to host Gwinn at 4 p.m. Friday, while Ishpeming will be at Gladstone at 4 p.m. Monday.

Here are details from meets held Monday and Tuesday:

Marquette 8, Westwood 0

On Monday at Marquette, the Sentinels didn’t drop a set in its sweep at home.

“I think our boys were very happy to finally get a match under their belt,” Sentinels head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the result. “Despite the low number of outdoor practices, our crew started off the season with some strong play.”

He was particularly pleased with the play of No. 2 singles player Caden Laurn and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Winston Leonard and Conner Henry.

“At No. 2 singles, both Cadens played extremely well in the windy conditions,” Thomsen said of Laurn’s victory over Westwood’s Caden Balzarini, 6-2, 6-4. “It was a fun match to watch.

“On the other side of the courts, it was nice to see our No. 1 doubles team of Winston Leonard and Conner Henry play their best tennis on key points. For the first meet of the year, it was good tennis, but from the coach’s perspective, there is still a lot to work on.”

Leonard and Henry scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Patriots’ Xavier Grondz and AJ Pizziola.

Other Marquette singles wins were posted by No. 1 Lucas Belkowski, No. 3 Brady Janofski and No. 4 Dominic Camilli, while doubles triumphs were also turned in by No. 2 Kane Bush and Elan Chu, No. 3 Bode Helman and Conner Dunn, and No. 4 Billy Krebs and Jack Tiziani.

Westwood 7, Ishpeming 1

On Tuesday at Westwood, the Patriots turned things around, achieving all seven of their wins in straight sets as the only three-setter was won by the Hematites’ Gideon Krook at No. 3 singles over WHS’ Evan Hebert, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5.

Westwood’s victories were posted in singles by No. 1 Damian Grondz, No. 2 Balzarini and No. 4 Caeden Nurmi, while doubles triumphs came via No. 1 Grondz and Pizziola, No. 2 Ethan Marta and Jacob Ridl, No. 3 Brady Dobson and Sean Grove, and No. 4 Steven Raisanen and Brody Verville.

Negaunee 8, Gwinn 0

On Tuesday at Negaunee, the Miners lost a total of just two games over seven contested matches as the Modeltowners didn’t field a No. 4 singles player.

NHS head coach Kyle Saari pointed out the play of his No. 2 doubles pairing of Vince Tincknell and Marshall Knapp and No. 3 singles player Max Larson.

“Vince and Marshall are off to a real strong start for us,” Saari said in his emailed comments. “They’re both motivated to play at a high level and they’ve been consistent so far.

“It’s tough to say where our doubles lineup will shake out by the end of the year, but the competition will benefit every flight for us early.

“We’re looking for a big week out of Max, too. We’re feeling his game can take a big jump by the end of May, with his feet and racquet prep getting a little better each time out. He’s an important piece in our lineup.”

Negaunee also got victories in singles from No. 1 Easton Guenette, No. 2 Nolan O’Dovero and No. 4 Axl Sarasin, while getting wins in doubles also from No. 1 Quinn Walters and Carson Lajimodiere, No. 3 Trent Emard and Conner Steede, and No. 4 Wyatt Nelson and Branden Alba.
