MENOMINEE — The Marquette Senior High School baseball got in the win column for the first time this season with an 11-7 win at Menominee on Wednesday afternoon.
After losing three games in Mauston, Wisconsin, last weekend, the Sentinels put together the final comeback in this back-and-forth affair, scoring three runs in the fifth to erase a 6-5 deficit. In that rally, a run was scored on an Evan Brown single, another run on a Jameson Sandstrom groundout and a third on a Trey Niemi single to right field.
Brown and teammate Desmond Gleason each had two hits, with Brown and Niemi both collecting two RBIs. Sandstrom drew two of Marquette’s six walks, while Gleason had two of his team’s half-dozen stolen bases.
Alex Brennan started on the mound and pitched two innings for the Sentinels, allowing no runs on just one hit and one walk as he struck out two. Gleason also threw two innings, also shutting out Menominee in his stint as he allowed one hit and two walks with two K’s.
Marquette got out to a fast start with four RBI hits in the top of the first, doubles by Gleason and Brennan and singles by Brown and Easton Jezewski.
But the Maroons tied it 4-4 in the third with a hit batsman, error, ground out and fly out aiding that rally.
The Sentinels went back on top 5-4 in the fourth on a passed ball, while Menominee took its only lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs after a groundout and error each brought in a run.
Marquette has a busy weekend downstate, playing a doubleheader at Traverse Central at 3:30 p.m. today and another twinbill at Charlevoix at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Sentinels return for their home opener at Haley Field in north Marquette at 4 p.m. Monday to face Superior Central.
