Sentinels baseball hits rough sledding in Wisconsin

MAUSTON, Wis. — Marquette opened its high school baseball season last weekend in Wisconsin, losing a trio of games to a pair of schools from the Badger State and one from northern Illinois.

The Sentinels fell 21-9 to Hayward, 11-10 to Aurora, Illinois, Catholic Central after leading 9-2 at one point, and also 4-0 to Denmark.

MSHS’ best performance came in the middle game against Aurora Catholic as Marquette senior pitcher Desmond Gleason allowed four runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

The Sentinels got on the board early as Jacob Geller hit into a ground out that scored two runs. Teammates Jack Keough and Jameson Sandstrom each drew a walk to score a run, while Wes Robinson had a two-run single to put the Marquette up 6-0 after one inning.

Aurora turned the tables in the seventh inning, scoring seven runs on no hits to come from behind for the win.

Against Hayward, Robinson went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, singling in the second and fourth before hitting an RBI triple in the fifth.

Hayward scored six runs on three hits in the second, highlighted by RBI singles from Parker Kirkland and Ryker Chipman. Hayward added seven runs on two hits in the sixth.

Miscues and bases on balls were the telling story as the Sentinels committed 24 errors in three games while walking 23 batters.

After playing at Menominee on Wednesday, Marquette gets back on the road for a downstate trip this weekend, playing doubleheaders at Traverse City Central on Friday afternoon before heading to Charlevoix on Saturday afternoon.

The Sentinels come home to host Superior Central in a single at 6 p.m. Monday at Haley Field in north Marquette.
