MARQUETTE — Score a goal, celebrate with your teammates. Score several goals, win a game.
But score eight goals — for the third time this season — and you win not only conference honors, but national ones, too.
Josie Lakosky of the women’s lacrosse team at Northern Michigan University led the Wildcats to a 16-7 victory over Concordia-St. Paul in the Superior Dome on Saturday.
Then the junior attacker was honored on Monday as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the third time she’s won that award just this season.
And on Tuesday afternoon, Lakosky was named the National Offensive Player of the Week by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association for the second time in her collegiate career.
Her first IWLCA national offensive award was a shared one just over a year ago, on March 18, 2025, after an NMU-record 13-point outing in a game.
This time around, the Victoria, Minnesota, native finished with 11 points after also being credited with three assists. And she did it with just 11 total shot attempts, 10 of them shots on goal.
Lakosky contributed more than just on the scoreboard on Saturday, adding in a career-best 10 draw controls to go with three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Nationally, though, her rankings center around scoring. She’s No. 1 in NCAA Division II with 7.00 points per game, with a whole bunch of No. 2 ratings — 62 goals, 84 points, 5.17 goals per game, 10.33 total shots per game and 8.83 shots on goal per game.
In the GLIAC, she far and above leads in three of the four main offensive categories, with only her 1.16 assists per game ranking sixth to league leader Susie Monson’s 1.76 a contest.
In goals per game, she’s at 3.63, well over half a goal ahead of No. 2 Anna Fisher of C-SP at 2.94. In shots per game, she’s at 9.00, exactly two a game ahead of Fisher’s 7.00. And in points per game, she comes in at 4.79, not quite a half-point an outing ahead of Ashleigh Rothe of Grand Valley State’s 4.38.
Additionally, in another category, Lakosky is third in draw controls per game with 4.11, trailing C-SP’s Monson with 5.47.
Lakosky gets a chance to put all that talent to the test this weekend when the Wildcats play their final home games of the regular season against GLIAC third-place Davenport at 5 p.m. today and league leader Grand Valley at noon Sunday.
Two wins would net Northern no worse than a tie for the top of the league going into the final two weeks of the regular season before the GLIAC Tournament starts May 1.
