MARQUETTE — The lacrosse team at Northern Michigan University gets one final tuneup for the upcoming conference tournament with a road game in the state of Minnesota today.
In what is being touted as a preview of the semifinals in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, the Wildcats travel to the state capital of St. Paul to take on Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m. EDT in the Concordia Dome.
Fans can tune into the live stream at https://www.flolive.tv/signup?redirect=%2Flive%2F225679, or visit the NMU athletics website at nmuwildcats.com and look under the women’s lacrosse schedule for links to live video, live statistics and a preview.
NMU is locked into second place in the GLIAC with 5-2 conference and 11-4 overall records. While Grand Valley State has clinched the regular-season title at 7-0, despite a modest 9-7 overall mark, C-SP and Davenport will end up tied for third at 3-5 if Northern wins today. However, apparently due to tiebreakers, the Golden Bears have clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming four-team GLIAC Tournament, according to a preview report from NMU Sports Information.
The tourney is scheduled with the semifinals next Friday and championship on Sunday, May 3, a site and specific times not yet announced. However, Grand Valley has hosted the event the past four years.
The Wildcats have a 12-8 all-time record vs. C-SP, which is currently 6-9 overall this season, and have won 12 of their past 14 meetings dating back to 2021. Northern has also won three of its past four vs. C-SP in St. Paul, the Golden Bears winning the 2025 matchup there 13-9.
In their first meeting this season, Northern prevailed 16-7 in the Superior Dome on April 4, junior attacker Josie Lakosky leading the way with eight goals and 11 points, in addition to 10 draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
After C-SP lost five of six matches in one stretch at midseason, the Bears bounced back with a 17-12 win over Davenport and 19-5 triumph over SVSU the past two weekends to get back into the hunt for third place in the GLIAC.
Lakosky has taken over every NMU single-season record but one, assists, and is already approaching several career marks even with her senior season not until next year at Northern.
She recently surpassed 200 career goals, the second Wildcat to do that, and is nine away from 100 goals this season, something only nine other players across NCAA Division II have done since the 2001-02 season.
