Miners, Sentinels sweep tennis twinbills

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee and Marquette each swept a doubleheader of high school boys tennis meets without losing a single match in any of them on Wednesday.

The Miners remained at home to defeat both Ishpeming and Munising 8-0, while the Sentinels hit the road, venturing into Delta County to take on next-door neighbors Gladstone and Escanaba and also coming away with a pair of 8-0 whitewashes.

Marquette is off until Monday, when it travel to Kingsford at 4:30 p.m. EDT, while Negaunee doesn’t play again until Tuesday, when it hosts Gladstone at 4 p.m. Marquette and Negaunee square off in their own dual against each other at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Before that, Gwinn travels to face Westwood at 4 p.m. today, while Ishpeming is at Gladstone at 4 p.m. Monday.

Here are details from the Miners and Sentinels sweeps on Wednesday:

Negaunee 8, Munising 0

The Miners had little trouble going up against a shorthanded Mustangs team that was only able to field one singles flight and two in doubles.

In those three matches, Negaunee lost a total of five games, chalking up at least one 6-0 set in each.

Negaunee 8, Ishpeming 0

Both teams were able to field a full four flights in both singles and doubles, but the Miners again only lost a total of six games across the eight matches as their record improved to 5-0-1.

Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari was happy with a couple of his flights in particular, Wyatt Nelson and Brandon Alba at No. 4 doubles and Max Larson at No. 3 singles. Each of those flights lost just one game to their Hematites’ opponent or opponents.

“Nelly (Nelson) and Brandon are gaining confidence and they have athleticism we always look to have in a doubles team,” Saari said in emailed comments that detailed the meets. “Nelly’s length gives a lot of people problems because he can reach anything at the net.

“Max has made it a mission to get to the net more, and his game’s more diverse because of it. He’s learning when to pick his spots.”

The No. 1 flights also picking up wins for the Miners were Easton Guenette in singles and Quinn Walters and Carson Lajimodiere in doubles.

Marquette 8, Gladstone 0

At Gladstone, the Sentinels won this meet with relative ease, winning every match in two sets and dropping a total of just 10 games across the eight matches.

“Overall, it was a solid day and hopefully we learned a few things today that we will be able to use as the season goes along,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in his email detailing the meets.

“All our doubles teams played two really good matches today. Teammates did a good job of communicating and attacking balls at the net.

“Specifically, Winston Leonard and Conner Henry had a good battle with the Gladstone boys. They had some ups and downs, but managed to make some adjustments in the second set that really got them going.”

Leonard and Henry combined at No. 1 doubles for a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Braves’ Teagan Reynolds and Tyler Soderman.

All of Marquette’s Nos. 3 and 4 flights in both singles and doubles won without dropping a single game between them.

Marquette 8, Escanaba 0

At Escanaba, Marquette had to work quite a bit harder to pull out this 8-0 victory, being sent to a third set at No. 2 singles and getting pushed to seven-win set at No. 3 singles.

“The singles boys also had a good day,” Thomsen said. “Lucas Belkowski at No. 1 singles struck the ball super clean today against a couple of solid opponents.

“Brady Janofski at No. 2 singles stepped up his game in the third set to pull away from a quality opponent.”

Janofski scored a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over the Eskymos’ Brett Swanson, while Belkowski was an easy 6-0, 6-0 winner over Esky’s Chase Korpi.

The other close match was at No. 3 singles, where Caden Laurn fended off EHS’ Kyle Smith 6-3, 7-5.

Meanwhile in doubles, the Sentinels lost a total of just two games over four flights.
