Miners pull off softball sweep at Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Negaunee got a pair of solid pitching performances and some timely hitting to sweep a high school softball doubleheader played at Kingsford on Wednesday.

The Miners produced 4-0 and 12-2 victories.

After having another twinbill at home against Escanaba on Thursday, Negaunee is next scheduled to play Gwinn at 4 p.m. today. In an unusual move, the games are listed to be played at Hurley Field in Marquette. After that is a road date at Manistique at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Here are details about the Kingsford games:

Negaunee 4, Kingsford 0

In the opener, Alyse Robar pitched a two-hit shutout for the Miners, walking two and striking out 12 as the defense behind her didn’t commit an error.

They needed that dominant performance as Negaunee didn’t score until the sixth inning when Robar singled in a run.

Robar and teammates Natalie Pantti, Rheana Nelson, Brielle Anderson and Olivia Richards each had a hit for NHS, with Robar, Nelson and Richards each getting an RBI, too.

Mya Brunswick took the pitching loss for the Flivvers, going all seven innings and allowing four runs — only one earned — on five hits as she walked one and K’d five. Jolie Fleming and Kyra Clement had Kingsford’s hits.

Negaunee 12, Kingsford 2

In the nightcap, the Miners all but put this one away with a seven-run fourth inning. During that rally, Richards hit an RBI single, a steal of home brought in another run and Cassie Feys cracked a two-run homer to left field.

After that, an error scored another run as Anderson and Ainsley Brunette each had RBI singles.

Kingsford had scored first with a run in the opening inning on a Fleming RBI triple. She finished 2 for 3.

But Negaunee quickly took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second. Kylie Cardoni started the scoring with a two-run single, while Delaney Gladwell added an RBI double and Richards a sacrifice bunt to bring in another run.

Brunette got the pitching win, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings, walking three and fanning three. Richards relieved for one inning of shutout ball, not allowing a hit while walking one and striking out one.

Karly Trevillian took the loss on the rubber for the Flivvers, going five innings as she gave up all 12 runs — six earned — on 11 hits with four walks and two K’s.

Among the Miners’ hits were two each by Brunette and Cardoni as each also had two RBIs. Richards had three of Negaunee’s six steals, too.
