Marquette girls soccer splits downstate to open season
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team opened its season downstate last weekend by splitting games in Harbor Springs and Traverse City.
The Sentinels lost at Harbor Springs 5-3 on Friday evening before bouncing back for a 3-2 victory at Traverse City Central on Saturday afternoon.
Marquette has also had a pair of games postponed at Houghton last week and at Iron Mountain on Monday.
“It was nice to finally get outside and play,” MSHS head coach Colleen McKay said in an email detailing the results from last weekend. “For our first two games, we saw some really great things that we can continue to build on. We hope to start training outside soon.”
MSHS gets back to work with a game at Kingsford at 6 p.m. EDT today and at Houghton at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Marquette’s first home game of the season is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. next Thursday against Marinette, Wisconsin.
Against Harbor Springs, Sentinels freshman Avery Osborne jumped right into the fray in her varsity debut, scoring a three-goal hat trick that included a penalty-kick score in the first half. Sophomore Lily Quinnell had an assist.
Then in Traverse City, Marquette’s Elsie Talvensaari clinched the win with the game-winning goal late that was assisted by Sydney Kuhl.
Osborne added two more goals, with one assist credited to Allie Kreis.
