Area players named Special, Honorable Mention

MARQUETTE — More than a dozen boys high school basketball players from The Mining Journal’s coverage area in five central Upper Peninsula counties earned Special Mention and Honorable Mention in All-U.P. voting earlier this week.

The U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association met at Northern Michigan University on Monday, determining awards in both boys and girls basketball. Girls honors will be announced next week.

Special Mention was accorded to players who didn’t make it on their division’s Second Team but received two or more votes. Honorable Mention went to all others.

The area’s lone Special Mention boys player was 6-foot-1 junior guard Joseph Fish of Baraga, who averaged 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, four assists and two steals per game.
