ESCANABA — Six players from Alger County schools won a total of seven awards when the Skyline Central Conference recently announced its high school girls basketball honorees.

A Munising sophomore, Addie Bowerman, was the lone player among them to win multiple awards as she carted off a berth on the Skyline Central First Team and also a position with the league’s Defensive Team.

Mustangs junior teammate Kaylen Kienitz won a spot on the Second Team, while senior Olivia Cotey joined Bowerman on the Defensive Team and sophomore Kiera Curtis landed on the honorable mention list.

Two Superior Central players were also honored. Senior Addie Frusti was named to the Skyline Central Second Team while fellow senior Marissa Strohm earned her way onto honorable mention.

Munising, which finished at 17-6, won the opening game of its MHSAA Division 4 district tournament over Big Bay de Noc on March 4 before falling to eventual state champion Ishpeming in the district title game two days later.

The Mustangs are listed on the MHSAA website as having a 5-2 record in the Large Schools Division of the Skyline Central Conference.

Superior Central got off to a rough start before winning three in a row late in the season to finish 6-13. The final victory of that string was its opening Division 4 district tourney triumph over Rapid River on March 2 before the Cougars also bowed out to the state champion Hematites, for SC in the district semifinals.

Forest Park, considered a Large School in the Skyline, had the league’s best record of 9-0 in conference games, while North Dickinson topped out the Small Schools category at 6-3.

The Trojans were also champions of Large School JV teams at 4-1, while the Nordics also carted off the JV Small Schools title at 5-0.

Those two schools also claimed five of the six special awards in the Skyline Central, though what might be considered the most important of them all, Player of the Year, was won by a player from Norway, senior Lauren Adams.

Forest Park’s Kim Bjork was named Coach of the Year and Trojans senior Kim Bjork claimed Defensive MVP. In addition, FP senior Elsie Williams won the Free Throw Award.

For North Dickinson, the Nordics won the Team Sportsmanship Award and junior Aunika Lindholm the Individual Sportsmanship honor.
