MARQUETTE — A trio of women’s basketball players from Northern Michigan University earned honors from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that were announced on Friday.
Senior guards Jacy Weisbrod and Sarah Newcomer earned spots on the GLIAC First Team, while sophomore guard-forward Sydney Whitehouse was named GLIAC Sixth Woman of the Year.
Weisbrod has been one of the best perimeter scorers in all of NCAA Division II. While leading the conference in scoring at 16.8 points per game, her 103 made 3-pointers is No. 1 in the country over both Divisions I and II, while her 3.43 made per game is No. 2 nationwide. She also makes 3s at a 40.7% rate, No. 3 in the conference.
Weisbrod scored 20 or more points a dozen times and had at least four triples 15 times. She also had multiple 3s in 23 of 30 games, surpassing 1,000 career points in January as the 29th player in program history to achieve that.
She had a career-high 33 points against Northwood on Dec. 17.
Newcomer was another big scoring threat for the Wildcats, averaging 11.2 ppg. After earning GLIAC Second Team honors a year ago, she moves up to the First Team this season.
She was in the GLIAC top five with 2.4 made 3s and a 38.0% success rate shooting them, while her 73 made triples was top 30 in the nation.
Twice she sank seven triples in a game, including in her career-high 27-point outing vs. Michigan Tech on Jan. 8.
Whitehouse’s honor marks the second straight season a Northern player has been named the Sixth Woman of the Year after former Wildcat Abi Fraaza won it in 2024-25.
Whitehouse appeared in all 31 NMU games off the bench, averaging 9.0 ppg, 4.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 0.6 steals while averaging slightly less than 19 minutes court time per game. She shot 41.3% from the field, was third on the team with 57 offensive rebounds and scored in double figures 13 times, including in nine of the final 12 games of the regular season.
She reached her career high of 25 points in the Wildcats’ 74-66 victory over Michigan Tech in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday, with a regular-season high of 21 points achieved against Purdue Northwest on Jan. 22.
