Purple Hornets earn 2 major awards in CMC girls hoops

MARQUETTE — The L’Anse High School girls basketball team and its coach were among the major award winners when the Copper Mountain Conference determined postseason awards recently.

The Purple Hornets’ Josh Eagle was named Coach of the Year, while the squad itself earned Team of the Year with its perfect 9-0 conference record and 20-4 overall mark.

L’Anse and Baraga, another team that was 20-4 overall while compiling a third-place 6-2 league record, each won five honors on all-conference units.

The Vikings had two on the CMC Elite Team, senior Kara Roberts and sophomore Mya Hendrickson, after both were earlier chosen for the Copper Country Division First Team.

Apparently, those honored from the Copper Country and Porcupine Mountain divisions are then voted upon for possible inclusion on the Elite Team. And the only two on the Copper Country side that made the Elite Team were the pair from Baraga.

Joining Roberts and Hendrickson on the Copper Country Division First Team were two Hornets, sophomore Kwynn Voskuhl and freshman Dalanna Connor.

Two more L’Anse players earned inclusion on the Copper Country Division Second Team, sophomore Breyelle Bowers and eighth-grader Danica Jahfetson.

One from each of the schools at the south end of Keweenaw Bay had a Copper Country Division honorable mention, too, with L’Anse sophomore Princess Pierre and Baraga freshman Cara Connor.

Ewen-Trout Creek, which finished second in the conference at 8-1, its only CMC loss to L’Anse in late January, gained the league’s other two major awards. Both were won by sophomore Bree Besonen as league MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.
