MARQUETTE — All he did was the score the most points of his illustrious four-year playing career. Then he broke that mark two days later.

Graduate student Dylan Kuehl of the men’s basketball team at Northern Michigan University was named Monday as Offensive Player of the Week in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This was the third time he has won this weekly honor this season.

Kuehl, already one of the leading scorers in the league, scored a career-high 36 points in Thursday’s 100-87 victory over Roosevelt at NMU’s Vandament Arena. Then on Saturday, he upped that career high by putting in 41 points in a 98-75 home triumph over Wisconsin-Parkside.

Those wins, and nothing short of those wins, were what clinched the Wildcats a share of the conference regular season championship and No. 1 seed for this week’s GLIAC Tournament.

Other than drawing the No. 8 seed in Ferris State for the first-round quarterfinals on Wednesday night, it insures that NMU will host the tourney semifinals and finals if they win the opener.

As a fourth-year player at Northern, Kuehl, a 6-foot-6 forward from Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, has won four conference titles between GLIAC regular-season and tournament crowns.

Between last week’s two games, Kuehl shot 70% from the field — 13 of 20 vs. Roosevelt and 15 of 20 against Parkside — while making 4 of 7 on 3-pointers each game, good for 57% success. Just for good measure, he also sank 13 of 14 free throws over the two games, a 92.9% rate.

He also totaled 16 rebounds and nine assists while making three blocked shots vs. Parkside. And he didn’t commit a single turnover in a total of 64 minutes court time over those games.

Not measured on the stats sheet but by NMU Sports Information, he threw down five dunks on Saturday.

For the season, he’s now averaging 21.3 points per game to rank in the top 15 in NCAA Division II, shooting 56.7% from the field and grabbing 6.3 rebounds a game.

In GLIAC games, he finished No. 1 in the regular season at 23.8 ppg — more than 2 1/2 points ahead of any other player — with his 58.6% on field goals second, 1.5 blocks a contest third and 6.4 rebounds an outing 10th.

Over his career, he’s helped transform the Wildcats’ program. When he’s on the court, Northern is 93-34, a .732 winning percentage, while his 2,089 points are third on NMU’s all-time list, just 21 points behind No. 2 Cory Brathol of the late 1990s with 2,110, and 135 after No. 1 Bill Harris of the mid-1980s with 2,224.
