EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Junior diver Kalina Ceglinski was the star for the women’s swimming and diving team of Northern Michigan University, earning All-American honors not once, but twice, at the NCAA Division II Championships held in Evansville, Indiana, last week.
These were her first All-America awards she’s earned in her collegiate career.
Last Thursday, she advanced through diving qualifications on the three-meter board to reach the “B” final, just missing the top-eight cutoff for the “A” finals.
But she won that “B” final, giving her ninth place with 435.80 points and getting Second Team All-American laurels.
Then on Saturday, she again qualified for the “B” finals in one-meter diving with 396.26 points after placing 15th in the qualifier. She came in third in that final with 412.85 points, giving her 11th place overall, another Second Team honor.
Northern finished in a tie for 27th place with 15 points as Nova Southeastern (Florida) won with 486. From the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Grand Valley was eighth with 225, Saginaw Valley State 19th with 30, Davenport 24th with 19 and Wayne State 30th with seven.
On Thursday, NMU junior teammate Carlotta Santi finished 24th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 51.41 seconds, an event she was 22nd in at nationals a year ago.
On Friday, Santi was 17th in the 500 free in 5:00.85, while freshman Evangeline Pierce was 20th in the 100 backstroke in 56.07 seconds.
Then on Saturday, Pierce competed in the 200 back and finished 17th in 2:01.47.
