MARQUETTE — New head football coach Matt Janus of Northern Michigan University has named four more assistant coaches to his staff after he initially announced his offensive and defensive coordinators soon after his hiring just about a month ago.
Joining offensive coordinator Boomer Roepke are wide receiver coach Cade Garcia and offensive line coach Zach Metkler, while beefing up the staff with defensive coordinator Ryan Bright are defensive line coach Kyle Krezek and defensive backs coach Isaiah Powell-Major.
This group was said to have experience across NCAA Division I FBS and FCS, along with Division II, that emphasizes player development, recruiting and on-field success, according to an NMU Sports Information news release announcing the hires.
“What a group of coaches we have joining us in Marquette!” Janus said. “They bring a winning pedigree and will also UP the experience of our current student-athletes.”
Here is more about each of the position coaches:
• Cade Garcia — He joins Northern after serving as an offensive assistant coach for tight ends at Division I Football Championship Series school Northern Arizona and as a graduate assistant coach for wide receivers at Carroll University.
At Carroll, he also coordinated academic support for more than 130 student-athletes that helped improve overall team performance and player development.
A former quarterback at Wisconsin-La Crosse, where Janus was head coach before NMU, Garcia earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business management and an MBA from Carroll.
• Kyle Krezek — He comes from Iowa State of the Big 12, where he assisted the defensive line and linebackers on a team that went 11-3 in 2024, reached the conference championship game and finished ranked in the top 15 in the nation. He also contributed to recruiting and defensive analysis during his tenure.
A former Iowa State defensive lineman, Krezek earned undergraduate degrees in kinesiology and psychology, as well as a master’s degree in health care analytics and operations.
• Zach Metkler — He brings experience from multiple collegiate levels, most recently as assistant offensive line coach and offensive analyst at Eastern Michigan of the Mid-American Conference. He has also served as offensive coordinator and offensive line and tight ends coach at Manchester University, overseeing offensive strategy and player development.
A former four-year offensive lineman at Allegheny College, Metkler earned a degree in neuroscience and psychology.
• Isaiah Powell-Major — Coming from Wayne State (Nebraska) College, he helped improve that team’s pass defense, finishing 10th nationally in Division II, tying for fourth in interceptions and leading the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in completion percentage allowed. He also played a key role in guiding the team to the 2025 NSIC South Division title.
He is a graduate of Fairmont State with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
