Westwood, Gwinn girls pick up road victories

MANISTIQUE — The Westwood High School girls basketball team picked up its second win in a row on Friday night, traveling to Manistique to take a 58-23 victory.

Coupled with a 43-29 road victory at Iron Mountain three nights earlier, the Patriots improved to 5-11 this season and 3-5 in the West PAC.

While balanced scoring was the key to beating the Mountaineers, on Friday, Westwood’s Lyn Magnuson was the only player to score in double figures as she pumped in 19 points.

Ten players scored for the Pats, however, next being Morgan Schneider with nine points and Addy Hallum with seven.

Pressley Spettel paced the Emeralds (1-12) with six points.

Manistique is back on the floor tonight with a 7:15 p.m. EST game at Iron Mountain, then travels to Stephenson at 7:15 p.m. EST Thursday. In addition, the Emeralds have a game at Bay College in Escanaba at 7 p.m. Friday against Upper Peninsula Division 4 No. 1 Ishpeming.

Westwood resumes play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hancock, then hosts Menominee at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Gwinn 52, Iron Mountain 26

On Friday at Iron Mountain, the Modeltowners won for the second time in three games to again tease the .500 mark as they improved to 7-8, 1-6 in the West PAC.

Gwinn also won at Escanaba 50-28 last Monday before losing a close game at home to Menominee on Wednesday.

“(On) Wednesday, we had a 32-29 loss to Menominee in which we shot 21% and felt like we could have had a better showing,” Modeltowners head coach Adam Ely said in an email detailing the result. “Coming back Friday on the road with an energetic response was important.”

Three girls carried the scoring load for Gwinn on Friday, with Makayla Delmont and Kadence Ruggerio each scoring 14 points and Adeline Derwin adding 12, that trio the only players for either team scoring in double figures.

However, Ely was concerned about his team’s free-throwing shooting, as the Modeltowners made just 2 of 8 there.

“Three girls (scoring) in double figures helps,” Ely said. “The only thing I didn’t like from (us) offensively was our (performance) from the line. Fortunately for us, we didn’t (give) them (a chance) on the line either.”

IM made just 3 of 4 free throws.

Gwinn raced out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter, Ruggerio snagging a pair of 3-pointers and Delmont one, then added to it in the second quarter for a 30-12 halftime lead.

In the second period, Delmont, Ruggerio and Daena Demars each hit a triple.

And the Modeltowners put it away in the third by going up 46-17 entering the final eight minutes.

Monroe Vedin, Olivia Geneva and Khloe Jayne each scored seven points to pace the Mountaineers (2-14).

Gwinn has a pair of big challenges this week, host U.P. Divisions 1-3 No. 1 Negaunee at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, then traveling to Divisions 1-3 No. 2 Gladstone at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
