CALEDONIA — Like radio deejays of yesteryear would often say, the hits just keep a’comin’.

Those “hits” are long-range, 3-point baskets and the maker of them so often is Jacy Weisbrod of the women’s basketball team at Northern Michigan University.

The Wildcats senior pumped in six more of them — in just eight attempts — to set the program record with her 248th career triple late in the first half of NMU’s 95-62 thrashing at Davenport on Saturday afternoon.

No one could really be surprised, considering Weisbrod not only leads the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 3s made each game, but all of NCAA Division II too, with a little over 3 1/2 per game this season.

On this particular bomb, teammate Sarah Newcomer drove the lane and drew a pair of defenders, leaving Weisbrod wide open after her teammate passed her the ball. The record had previously been held by ex-Negaunee High School standout Marissa Dellangelo, who finished her NMU career in 2002.

Weisbrod not only made a collection of 3s, but she led all scorers with 25 points, hitting 8 of 11 overall from the field and 3 of 3 free throws. Then she added five rebounds and three assists.

That allowed the Wildcats to race to a 29-10 lead after one quarter, and even after the Panthers pulled back within 51-37 at halftime, Northern pulled away again in the third, extending its lead to 76-47 entering the final period.

NMU kept pace atop the GLIAC at 9-3 in league games and 18-4 overall. The Wildcats are tied with Wayne State in the conference standings and are in an almost-tie with second-place Ferris State at 8-2. National No. 1 Grand Valley State continues to lead the way at 12-0 in the GLIAC and 20-0 overall.

Newcomer contributed 24 points to the winning effort, also making six 3s in 12 tries and 9 of 15 overall from the field as she had three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Teammate Faith Walder scored 10 points, making 5 of 6 shots, with three assists, while Negaunee product Alyssa Hill put up nine points and seven rebounds.

Jordyn Schmittdiel led NMU players with eight rebounds while she scored two points in just 18 minutes court time.

As a team, Northern made a season-high 16 triples in 29 tries, a 55.2% success rate.

Maddie Geers paced Davenport (6-14, 4-8 GLIAC) with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Weisbrod made her first triple about 3 1/2 minutes into the game, then another 28 seconds later, to give the Wildcats a 14-4 lead before the first quarter was half over.

Northern also finished the period on a 13-2 run to take a 19-point lead into the second quarter. And while the Wildcats didn’t add to their lead in the period No. 2, they maintained it in double digits going into halftime and beyond.

NMU’s biggest lead was 35 points, which happened three times in the fourth quarter, the first coming at 86-51 on a layup by Walder with 6:16 to go.

This week, Northern hosts a pair of GLIAC teams struggling to get back in the hunt for the eight-team GLIAC Tournament that takes place in early March.

Ninth-place Saginaw Valley State visits Vandament Arena at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with 10th-place Lake Superior State visiting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
