Skytta, Kuhl lead MSHS nordic skiers’ dominance at home

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School alpine ski teams had another dominant day on the slopes at Marquette Mountain, easily sweeping to titles at a conference meet held there on Tuesday.

The Sentinels had at least a top-two sweep — and in one race the top five — in all four slalom and giant slalom events combined for boys and girls.

Marquette’s Lake Skytta carted off slalom and GS titles on the boys side, with schoolmate Sydney Kuhl did the same in the girls races.

The Sentinels scored a near-perfect 21 points to win the boys meet as Ironwood was runner-up with 69, Norway had 84 and Houghton 137.

The MSHS girls were just about as good, scoring 24 points to 75 for Norway, 102 for Houghton and 110 for Ironwood.

Marquette will take part in an MHSAA Division 1 regional in Harbor Springs on Monday.

Here are details from each meet:

Boys meet

Skytta had either the fastest or second-fastest time down the slopes in all four of his runs.

In slalom, where Marquette swept the top five places, Skytta had a two-run time of 1 minute, 7.1 seconds to win by exactly a half-second over teammate Conner Henry, even though each had one fastest and one second-fastest time down the slopes.

Skytta’s runs were 33.57 and 33.44 seconds, while Henry’s were 33.30 and 34.21 for a 1:07.51 total.

The Sentinels completed their top-five sweep with Benjamin Kuhl in third in 1:08.93 on runs of 34.64 and 34.29, Brady Audette fourth in 1:11.14 on runs of 35.12 and 36.02, and Connor Dunn fifth in 1:11.89 on runs of 36.07 and 35.82.

Additionally for MSHS in the slalom, Danny Starr was eighth in 1:16.01, Ethan Dehlin ninth in 1:16.84, Sam Uchytil 11th in 1:20.72 and Jude Balding 17th in 1:28.20. Chase Dehlin got one run in but didn’t post an official score.

In GS, Skytta again had a victory of close to a half-second with runs of 27.30 and 27.35 for a 54.65-second total.

Henry was again second in 55.19 on runs of 28.00 and 27.19, while Benjamin Kuhl made it a Marquette top-three sweep by placing third in 55.53 on runs of 27.76 and 27.77.

After Ironwood’s Logan Holm finished fourth, Audette was fifth in 57.22 on runs of 28.70 and 28.52.

Another Ironwood racer, Adam Everson, was sixth, followed by five Sentinels in a row — Balding seventh in 58.12, Dunn eighth in 58.28, Starr ninth in 58.52, Ethan Dehlin 10th in 59.00 and Uchytil 11th in 59.94.

Chase Dehlin again got one run in but no posted total.

Girls meet

Like Skytta in the boys meet, Sydney Kuhl was the winner by around a half-second over teammate Estelle Dehlin in both slalom and GS.

In slalom, Kuhl had the fastest time in each run, 35.85 seconds in the first run and 37.26 in the second for a 1:13.11 total.

Dehlin was second fastest in both her runs, 36.31 and 37.44, for 1:13.75.

After Houghton’s Laura Lucak finished third, Marquette had five of the next six placers to insure its good finish.

The Sentinels’ Sophie Coxon was fourth in 1:17.33 on runs of 38.55 and 38.78, Lyla Isaacson fifth in 1:17.64 on runs of 38.66 and 38.98, Madalyn Croney seventh in 1:20.78 on runs of 39.41 and 41.37, Jillian Starr eighth in 1:20.80 on runs of 39.28 and 41.52, and Anna Bernard ninth in 1:21.32 on runs of 41.08 and 40.24.

Teammate Elin Betz was 15th in 1:34.83, too.

In GS, Sydney Kuhl and Estelle Dehlin exchanged fastest and second-fastest runs as Kuhl still emerged as winner in 57.46 seconds after runs of 28.75 and 28.71.

Dehlin earned second on runs of 28.73 and 29.10 for a 57.83 total, with Coxon completing Marquette’s 1-2-3 sweep in third in 58.58 on runs of 28.94 and 29.64.

Marquette had two more top-10 finishers, Croney sixth in 59.01 on runs of 29.21 and 29.80, and Isaacson eighth in 1:01.06 on runs of 30.18 and 30.88.
