Sentinels boys, Gremlins girls victorious in pool

MARQUETTE — The Marquette boys won every event on their way to a high school swimming and diving dual meet victory over visiting Houghton at the Sentinels pool on Tuesday afternoon.

The MSHS girls won four events, including one relay, but lost in their meet to the Gremlins.

Marquette posted a 95-81 triumph in the boys meet, with Houghton claiming a 104-80 victory for the girls.

“The Sentinel girls were defeated by (a) Gremlins (team) that has a lot of depth and talent,” MSHS head coach Nate McFarren said in an email detailing the meet. “The Marquette boys were successful by a narrow margin.”

The Sentinels boys had a pair of four-time winners, each swimmer winning two individual events and swimming a leg on two triumphant relays.

Jack Pozega won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Lucas Deiter took the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Each were on the victorious 200 free relay, with Pozega also joining the 200 medley relay winners and Deiter the 400 free relay victors.

Three of their teammates won three events each, as did one member of the Marquette girls team.

For the MSHS girls, Kaytlin Roell won the 50 free, 100 back and swam with her school’s triumphant 200 medley relay team, joining Lola Sved, Hailee LaCombe and Loralei Maki.

Teammate Logan McFarren added a girls win in the 200 free, while Sophia Hausmann captured the diving.

Back in the boys meet, the triple winners for Marquette were Beau Deiter taking the 200 free and 500 free, Gavin Mills the 50 free and Cade Kruhak the 100 butterfly as all three were on the winning 400 free relay.

Mills also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay, while Kruhak was with the 200 free relay winners.

The Sentinels’ Landen McFarren swam with two winning boys quartets, the 200 medley and 200 free relays, while Zayne Chouinard was also on the victorious 200 medley relay and Wyatt Ansell won diving.

Houghton’s Evelyn LaTendresse was a quadruple winner, taking the 200 IM, 100 fly and legs of the Gremlins’ victorious 200 free and 400 free relays.

Marquette is scheduled to host Manistique at 3:30 p.m. today, then host Houghton again at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, their last meets before the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals set for the Marquette pool on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21.
