Marquette posts quintet of 4-time swim, dive winners
MARQUETTE — Five swimmers and divers each won four events for Marquette Senior High School as the Sentinels swamped Manistique at a high school boys and girls swimming and diving meet held at the MSHS pool on Friday.
The Marquette girls prevailed 129-47 while the Sentinels boys were triumphant 119-44.
MSHS has one more dual meet left, against Houghton at 3:30 p.m. today, before the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals are set for the Marquette pool on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21.
“(We had) many great swims, lifetime and season best times,” Sentinels head coach Nate McFarren said in a email detailing Friday’s results. “It was great to see our swimmers and divers step up and truly set the tone for (the) U.P. Finals.”
Against Manistique, the Emeralds pulled out one event victory, Micah Connin winning the boys 500-yard freestyle by less than a second.
Marquette dominated the rest of the meet, with two boys and three girls each winning the maximum four events.
For the boys, Jack Pozega won the 100 free and 100 backstroke and Lucas Deiter the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly as each swam with the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Among Sentinels girls, Kaytlin Roell won the 200 free and 500 free, Sophie Hausmann the diving and 50 free, and Logan McFarren the 100 free and 100 breaststroke as each swam on two winning relays.
All three were on the winning 200 free relay, with Roell adding a win in the 200 medley relay and Hausmann and McFarren the 400 free relay.
Two MSHS boys and a girl tripled up in the win column.
Cade Kruhak won the boys’ 100 breast and Gavin Mills the boys’ 50 free as both swam on the triumphant 200 free relay, Kruhak adding a win in the 200 medley relay and Mills a victory in the 400 free relay.
Edith Jentoft won the girls’ 100 fly and legs of the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Four more swimmers, two boys and two girls, doubled their winning fun.
For the boys, Beau Deiter won the 200 free as he and Josiah Youngren both swam on the 200 free relay victors with Youngren adding a win in the 200 medley relay.
Among the girls, Lilliana Fogaroli won the 200 IM and was with the 400 free relay, while Hailee LaCombe took the 100 back and swam with the 200 medley relay winners.
Single wins were also posted by Wyatt Ansell in the boys’ diving, Zayne Chouinard in the boys’ 400 free relay, Lola Sved in the girls’ 200 medley relay and Loralei Maki in the girls’ 200 free relay.
