5 NMU athletes winners on track: Wildcats finish close runner-up at W-C-W Tri-Meet

UNIVERSITY CENTER — In a close women’s indoor track and field meet held at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Northern Michigan University was runner-up among the three teams at the W-C-W Tri-Meet.

W-C-W stands for the Wildcats of NMU, Cardinals of SVSU and Warriors of Wayne State.

Northern scored 112.5 points, while Wayne State won with 118 and Saginaw Valley was third with 104.5 as the Wildcats picked up five event victories and nine additional top-three finishes for a total of 14 podium places.

Manistique High School graduate Danielle Lund, an NMU sophomore, won the shot put with a personal-best 12.60 meters (41 feet, 4 inches), while adding third place in the weight throw with another personal best, 15.62 meters (51-3).

Northern fifth-year performer Crystal Walker had an identical pair of finishes, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.34 meters (17-6 1/4) and taking third place in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.93 seconds.

Sophomore teammate Alayna Vandegriff won the triple jump with a combined leap of 11.34 meters (37-2 1/2), then tied for second but had to settle for fourth place on tiebreakers in the pole vault after clearing 3.32 meters (10-10 3/4).

Senior Sophia Potter won the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 16.74 seconds, while senior Dani Van Lente was victorious in the 5,000 in 18:13.14 as sophomore teammate Celia Wallace was third in a personal-best 18:35.76.

Junior Kaitlin Smith matched Vandegriff in the pole vault, but based on tiebreakers with fewer misses, she was second after clearing 3.32 meters (10-10 3/4).

Senior Beverly Harper was runner-up in the 800 in a personal-best 2:13.84, while senior Madi Szymanski was second in the mile in 4:57.16.

The Wildcats’ 4-by-300 relay team of Marquette product and Northern junior Baux Truckey, freshman Lily Phillips, senior Kanya Campbell and Harper was third in 2:52.82.

Also placing third was senior Alizabeth Little in the shot put with a heave of 12.27 meters (40-3 1/8) and freshman Allison Schinke in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 10.44 meters (34-3).

Phillips added a fourth place in the 300 in 41.62, while also getting that place was junior Lana Mac in the 400 in 1:00.77, Harvey in the weight throw with a toss of 15.58 meters (51-1 3/8) and sophomore Taylor Rogers in the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 1.52 meters (4-11 7/8).

Taking fifths were sophomore Ella DeBruyn in the mile in 5:03.77, Phillips in the 60 hurdles in 9.26 seconds, Rogers in the 400 in 1:02.40, Harvey in the shot put with 11.76 meters (38-7) and Little in the weight throw with 14.81 meters (48-7 1/8).

Picking up a sixth place was freshman Ashley Choponis in the 800 with a personal-best 2:17.35.
