Westwood boys trio all bowl over 200 barrier

MARINETTE, Wis. — A trio of Westwood High School boys bowlers each broke the 200-game barrier while all three Patriots’ teams posted decisive wins during matches held in the Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference on Saturday.

Bowling at the Dome Lanes in Marinette, Wisconsin, this meet hosted by Menominee included a 219 game, the highest of the day, by Westwood sophomore Jeremiah Tobias, along with a 213 shot by Patriots senior Roman Yuhas and a 202 posted by WHS senior Johnny Jestila.

Those all came in the afternoon second shift on the schedule when the Westwood squads swept Ishpeming-Negaunee.

The Patriots boys won 34-6, Westwood girls triumphed 33-7 and the WHS “B” X team took a 34-6 win over I-N X.

In that same shift, Marquette won two of three matches from Iron Mountain. The Sentinels boys won 26-14, MSHS X prevailed 38-2, while the IM girls downed the Sentinels, 27-13.

The first shift featured no teams from The Mining Journal daily coverage area.

Top games included Calumet senior boy Linkin Carlin rolling a pair of 216 games, Escanaba senior boy Billy Britton a 201 and the Esky boys hitting a 201 Baker-style game. Baker games are where teammates alternate frames to come up with a single-game score.

In the team matches, Escanaba defeated Calumet in a boys match, 35-5, while the Gladstone boys won 38-2 over Menominee and Calumet X fended off Gladstone 32-8.

Forfeits were recorded by the Calumet girls over Escanaba and Gladstone over Menominee, the losing teams not able to field a full team.

L’Anse had a bye on this day.

This Saturday, River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming will host a match with shifts at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Scheduled for the opening shift are Westwood and L’Anse, while going the later shift are Ishpeming-Negaunee, Marquette and the L’Anse X and Westwood X teams.
