Sentinels skiers dominate at Pine Mountain
IRON MOUNTAIN — Marquette dominated in both boys and girls meets to open the high school alpine skiing season at Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain.
The Sentinels scored 21 points in the boys meet for a big victory as runner-up Ironwood was well back with 81. Host Norway scored 91 and Houghton had 134.
In the girls meet, Marquette was almost as dominant, scoring 24 points as the host Knights had 67, Ironwood 109 and Houghton 129.
Four skiers insured that the Sentinels swept the top two places in all four races — boys and girls slalom and boys and girls giant slalom.
Those four were boys racers Lake Skytta and Benjamin Kuhl and girls racers Sydney Kuhl and Estelle Dehlin. Between them, they occupied the top two spots in each race.
Those races included two runs for each skier, the times added together for the competitors’ scores.
In the boys meet, Skytta and Benjamin Kuhl shared the victories, Skytta winning the slalom and Kuhl the GS.
In slalom, Skytta won by more than 1 1/4 seconds over Kuhl as Marquette had a 1-2-3 sweep. Skytta had amazingly consistent runs of 30.05 and 30.10 seconds for a 1:00.15 total, while Kuhl was runner-up with runs of 30.80 and 30.62 for 1:01.42.
Teammate Conner Henry was a close third in 1:01.85, his runs being 29.90 and 31.95, his first run the only sub-30-second slalom run of the meet.
The Sentinels dominated throughout their lineup. After Ironwood’s Logan Holm finished fourth, MSHS boys occupied the next five places — Connor Dunn was fifth in 1:03.85, Brady Audette sixth with 1:04.33, Chase Dehlin seventh with 1:07.77, Jude Balding eighth in 1:07.96 and Ethan Dehlin ninth in 1:08.49.
And technically, both Dehlins were racing as JV team members.
GS was much the same story, just that Kuhl and Skytta reversed the top two spots.
Kuhl won in 50.69 seconds, getting in runs of 24.91 and 25.78, while Skytta was less than half a second back in 51.04, taking runs of 25.44 and 25.60.
In this race, Marquette slotted into the first four positions. Dunn was third in 53.12 with runs of 26.75 and 26.37, while Audette was fourth in 53.17 with runs of 26.74 and 26.43.
After Ironwood’s Holm and Adam Everson were fifth and sixth, respectively, the Sentinels filled in the next five positions — Balding seventh in 54.55, Danny Starr eighth in 55.61, Henry ninth in 55.89, Chase Dehlin 10th in 55.99 and Ethan Dehlin 11th in 56.64.
In the girls meet, Sydney Kuhl swept to victories of nearly a second in GS and not quite a half-second in slalom.
In GS, she reeled off the fastest two runs of 26.80 and 27.23 seconds for a 54.03 total. Estelle Dehlin had the next two fastest runs, 27.48 and 27.54, for a runner-up time of 55.02.
The Sentinels actually had the top three finishers, Madalyn Croney right on their heels in 55.24 with the fifth and sixth fastest times of 27.62 twice.
Marquette also filled in the majority of the remaining places down to 12th. MSHS’ Sophie Coxon was sixth in 56.80, Lyla Isaacson seventh in 56.84, Jillian Starr 10th in 58.41, Anna Bernard 11th in 58.87 and Armina Weinrick 12th in 59.96.
In girls slalom, Sydney Kuhl once again won with runs of 33.29 and 34.33 for a 1:07.62 total, less than half a second ahead of Estelle Dehlin in 1:08.08 with her runs of 34.06 and 34.02.
After Norway’s Sophia Fornetti was third, nearly a full second behind Dehlin, Marquette took the next five spots — Coxon was fourth in 1:10.34, Isaacson fifth in 1:10.76, Croney sixth in 1:11.19, Starr seventh in 1:11.28 and Bernard eighth in 1:13.62.
In addition, the Sentinels’ Weinrick was 12th in 1:16.74 and Elin Betz 17th in 1:23.13.
Next up for Marquette is a meet host by Houghton at Mont Ripley in Ripley on Tuesday.
