Sentinels’ Gramprie, Pats’ Letson pace UPBC bowlers
ISHPEMING — Daniel Gramprie of Marquette bowled the highest boys game and Olivia Letson of Westwood the highest girls game of the day during an Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference meet held at River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming on Saturday.
Both seniors on their respective teams, Gramprie shot a 239 game and Letson had 202 during their matches.
In addition, Gramprie’s teammate Desmond Gleason added in 226.
Several other area boys also broke the 200 barrier — Westwood sophomore Jeremiah Tobias shot 229, Ishpeming-Negaunee sophomore Aries Korsman had 223, I-N junior Killian Ryan 212 and Westwood senior Roman Yuhas 200.
In addition, two teams had tough-to-accomplish 200 games in the Baker part of their matches. In that bowling format, instead of bowlers rolling their own games, teammates alternate frames to come up with a single-game score.
The Westwood girls had a quite impressive 232 Baker game, while the Marquette X team shot 213.
In the team matches held that day, Westwood and Marquette pulled off three-match sweeps. The Patriots’ girls won 40-0 over Gladstone, with the WHS boys winning 37-3 over the Braves and the Westwood X “A” team taking a 40-0 win over Gladstone X.
Marquette’s boys won 39-1 over Menominee, the Sentinels girls won by forfeit over Menominee and the MSHS X squad won 35-5 over I-N X.
The other two Ishpeming-Negaunee teams did win their matches over Escanaba, the boys 31.5-8.5 and the girls by forfeit over the Eskymos.
In addition, Iron Mountain scored a three-match sweep of L’Anse, winning 31.5-8.5 in the girls match, 36-4 in the boys and 38-2 in the X match.
Calumet had a bye this week.
There are two more Saturdays remaining in the regular season — this week UPBC teams converge on Bowl-A-Rama in Escanaba, then on Jan. 24, all return to River Rock.
Three consecutive weeks of U.P. finals begin Jan. 31 with the girls singles at the Dome Lanes in Marinette, Wisconsin, while MHSAA regionals run Feb. 20-21 and state finals on Feb. 27-28.
