Marquette swimmers still undefeated after Tuesday sweep

MARQUETTE — Marquette kept its girls and boys records perfect this season as the Sentinels swept to victories over Gladstone at a high school swimming and diving meet held at the MSHS pool on Tuesday afternoon.

Marquette won all but one event in a 112-57 triumph in the girls meet, then only lost two events as the boys turned in a 105-60 win.

“It was a great night to be on the warm pool deck with the frigid temperatures outside,” veteran MSHS head coach Nate McFarren said in an email detailing the result. “It’s always kind of a crap shoot the week of exams, knowing (whether) our swimmers and divers will be in the right head space to be competing.

“(But) the Sentinels boys and girls did not disappoint. There were several personal bests and (MHSAA Upper Peninsula) Finals qualifiers.

“Gladstone also put up some very impressive swims and that brought the best out in everyone.”

There were four quadruple winners for the Sentinels, three in the girls meet. Each had two individual and two relay victories.

For the girls, Kaytlin Roell won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly, Sophie Hausmann the 50 freestyle and diving, and Logan McFarren took the 100 and 200 free.

All three were on the victorious 200 free relay, while Roell and Hausmann were also with the winning 200 medley relay and McFarren the triumphant 400 free relay.

The boys’ four-time winner was Jack Pozega, who took the 50 free and 100 free and swam with the 200 medley and 200 free relay victors.

Tripling up were the MSHS boys’ Josiah Youngren and Cade Kruhak and the girls’ Lilliana Fogaroli.

Youngren won the 100 breaststroke and Kruhak the 200 free, while both were on the winning 200 free relay as Youngren also won with the 200 medley relay and Kruhak with the 400 free relay.

Fogaroli took the 100 backstroke and swam with the girls’ triumphant 200 free and 400 free relays.

Another five Marquette swimmers were double winners.

For the boys, Lucas Deiter won the 200 IM and was with the 200 medley relay winners, while Beau Deiter took the 500 free and swam a leg of the victorious 400 free relay. Teammate Landen McFarren was with the triumphant 200 free and 400 free relays.

Among the girls, Edith Jentoft won the 500 free as she and Loralei Maki were both with the winning 400 free relay as Maki also won with the 200 medley relay.

Single winners were Wyatt Ansell, Zayne Chouinard and Mason Holm for the boys and Madi Zerbst for the girls.

Gladstone’s Tyler Soderman won the boys’ 100 fly and 100 back, while the Braves’ Irene Neumeier took the girls’ 100 breast.

The Sentinels’ next scheduled meet is at Kingsford at 5 p.m. EST Tuesday.
