Marquette swimmers split with Kingsford

KINGSFORD — The Marquette and Kingsford high school swimming and diving teams split victories at their meets held at the Flivvers’ pool on Tuesday.

The Sentinels girls won their meet 94-76, while Kingsford prevailed in the boys meet 85-73.

“It was a great night of swimming between the Flivvers and Sentinels,” MSHS head coach Nate McFarren said in an email detailing the result. “We were missing a couple of key players for the meet, but mental mistakes ultimately cost us.

“There are only three weeks left in the season and it looks like the (MHSAA Upper Peninsula) Finals is going be an extremely competitive battle.”

That meet will be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, at the Marquette pool.

Next week, the Sentinels have a meet at Houghton on Tuesday and host Manistique at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

On Tuesday at Kingsford, the Marquette girls won all three relays plus four of the eight individual events as diving apparently wasn’t held.

Logan McFarren was a four-time winner for the Sentinels, capturing the 100-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke while swimming with the victorious 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

Tripling up were teammates Sophie Hausmann and Kaytlin Roell. Hausmann won the 50 free and Roell the 200 free, while Hausmann was also with the winning 200 medley relay and Roell with the 400 free relay as both swam with the triumphant 200 free relay.

Doubling up were Loralei Maki and Edith Jentoft as both were on the 400 free relay winners, Maki also with the 200 medley relay and Jentoft adding in the victorious 200 free relay.

And Hailee LaCombe and Lilliana Fogaroli swam on the winning 200 medley relay.

In the boys meet, Marquette won a relay and three individual events.

Cade Kruhak won the 50 free, Gavin Mills the 100 butterfly and Zayne Chouinard the 500 free.

And Kruhak, Mills, Jack Pozega and Lucas Deiter made up the winning MSHS 200 free relay.

Sam Lamirand was Kingsford’s top swimmer as he won four events in the boys meet — the 100 free, 200 free, and legs on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.
