Girls hoops heating up in area

ISHPEMING — The Westwood girls basketball team took it on the chin three times in the past 10 days, falling twice to Gladstone and the other time to Calumet.

In other girls games, Marquette defeated Escanaba and Negaunee took down West Iron County on Tuesday evening.

Westwood is back on the hardwood with a game at 5:45 p.m. today at Houghton, while Marquette hosts Menominee at 6 p.m. Friday, the exact same time that Negaunee hosts Ishpeming.

Here are details:

Gladstone 66, Westwood 29

On Dec. 30 at the Patriots’ gym, Kaylin Doney led Westwood with eight points as eight players scored despite the low team total.

“It was a rough night for us on both sides of the floor,” WHS head coach Christie Makela said in a text detailing the result.

Lillie Johnson led the Braves with 24 points as Eva Pankonien added 18 and Addy Blowers 12.

Calumet 47, Westwood 25

On Friday at Calumet, Lyn Magnuson led Patriots scorers with nine points.

After falling behind 10-2 after one quarter, Westwood actually outscored the Copper Kings in the second period by one point, staying within 21-14 at halftime.

But Calumet pulled away with a 20-7 fourth quarter.

Gladstone 51, Westwood 30

On Tuesday at Gladstone, Johnson again went crazy scoring for the Braves, this time pumping in 27 points.

Magnuson paced the Pats with 12 while Doney had 11.

“We played way better against them this week opposed to last week,” Makela said in another text about this game. “So good improvement within the short turnaround.

“I’m happy with the fire and fight the girls showed (Tuesday). You can see it all starting to come together.

“Unfortunately, Lillie Johnson was just too much for us to contain (Tuesday).”

Marquette 55, Escanaba 33

On Tuesday at Marquette, Avery Osborne scored 20 points to lead the Sentinels (2-4, 1-1 Great Northern Conference).

“The first group (starters) set the tone with energy and effort in the first half,” MSHS head coach Ben Smith said in an email detailing the result. “It was a great team effort after returning to the court for the first time since Dec. 17.”

Negaunee 55, W. Iron Cty. 18

On Tuesday at Negaunee, junior Keira Waterman led the Miners with 19 points, one more than the entire Wykons team, with Paige O’Donnell and Gretel Johnson adding nine points apiece.

“We switched up defenses well and kept them guessing,” Negaunee head coach Mike O’Donnell said in an email detailing the result. “Keira Waterman had a whale of a game on both ends of the floor. She’s been a rock-solid defender all year and it was nice to see her break out offensively.

“We’ve had four different girls lead us in scoring this year, which shows how balanced we’ve been as a team.”

Johnson also added seven steals and Waterman five to their statistical lines, while teammate Lili Saunders pulled down seven rebounds.

Negaunee had a modest 12-5 lead after one quarter before turning on the jets, expanding it to 26-7 at halftime and 42-11 through three quarters.
