Experienced Sentinels swimmers sweep I-N

MARQUETTE — Marquette won all but one event in each meet as the Sentinels swept a younger, less experienced Ishpeming-Negaunee unit during a high school swimming and diving meet held at the MSHS pool on Friday afternoon.

“We were so thankful to still hold our dual meet against Ishpeming-Negaunee despite the school cancellation earlier in the day on Friday,” Marquette head coach Nate McFarren said in an email detailing the result.

“There were a lot of great swims and dives for both teams. However, experience seemed to be the difference with Marquette coming out victorious over a much younger Ishpeming-Negaunee team.”

Each team has a meet on the road on Tuesday afternoon, Marquette at Rudyard and I-N at Gladstone.

Both teams will also attend the Splash-N-Dash to be hosted by the Sentinels on Saturday. Diving starts at 10 a.m. and swimming events at noon.

In Friday’s dual meet, the Marquette girls won 108-72 and the MSHS boys prevailed 112-59.

The I-N Gators picked up their boys win in diving with senior Mateusz Wozniak winning by less than four points, while for their girls, sophomore Lola Dockery took the 100-yard butterfly by not quite three seconds.

Five Marquette swimmers were four-time winners.

For the Sentinels girls, Logan McFarren won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Kaytlin Roell the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, and Loralei Maki the 50 free and 500 free.

Each also had a hand in two winning relays, all three in the 400 free relays, with McFarren in the 200 medley relay and Roell and Maki in the 200 free relay.

Among the Marquette boys, Lucas Deiter won the 200 IM and 500 free, while Cade Kruhak took the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke. Both were on the victorious 200 medley relay with Deiter also on the winning 200 free relay and Kruhak on the triumphant 400 free relay.

Three more MSHS swimmers were triple winners, Sophie Hausmann in the girls meet in diving and the legs of the 200 free and 400 free relays.

For the boys, Gavin Mills took the 200 free and Beau Deiter the 100 free as each swam on the winning 200 free and 400 free relays.

And each Marquette team had a pair of double winners. With the boys, Jack Pozega won the 50 free and 100 backstroke, while Josiah Youngren swam a leg of the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relays.

In the girls meet, Hailee LaCombe won the 100 breast while she and Edith Jentoft were both on the triumphant 200 medley relay as Jentoft also swam a leg of the winning 200 free relay.
