BESSEMER — The Marquette Senior High School boys and girls downhill ski teams braved bitter cold to sweep to titles at the Theron Peterson Memorial Invitational held at Big Powderhorn Mountain and hosted by Ironwood High School on Tuesday.

Estelle Dehlin and Benjamin Kuhl led the Sentinels as they swept to both slalom and giant slalom individual titles in their respective girls and boys meets.

Marquette scored 27 points in the girls meet to 63 for runner-up Norway as the host Red Devils had 107 and Houghton 123.

For the boys, the Sentinels scored a near-perfect 24 points as Ironwood had 73, Norway 92 and Houghton 132.

While the MSHS squads won all four individual titles, they were particularly dominant in girls slalom and boys giant slalom. Each part of the meet was judged on a two-run combined time.

In slalom, Dehlin led a top-seven sweep, only allowing Norway to grab the bottom three rungs of the top-10 standings.

Dehlin and teammate Sydney Kuhl ran the four fastest girls slalom runs between them. Dehlin did hers in 40.58 and 40.26 seconds for a score of 1 minute, 20.84 seconds, while Sydney Kuhl turned in 40.51 and 41.04 for a 1:21.55 total.

Sydney Kuhl was more than three seconds ahead of her five teammates also in the top seven.

In third was the Sentinels’ Sophie Coxon in 1:24.78 on runs of 41.94 and 42.84, fourth was Madalyn Croney in 1:26.34 with runs of 43.28 and 43.06, fifth was Jillian Starr in 1:27.15 with runs of 42.33 and 44.82, sixth was Anna Bernard in 1:27.56 with runs of 43.59 and 43.97, and seventh was Lyla Isaacson in 1:27.69 with runs of 43.94 and 43.75.

Norway’s Abby Hoy, Sofia Wentarmini and Ingrid Holt were eighth through 10th, respectively, all more than two seconds behind Isaacson.

In girls GS, Dehlin again won by a shade more than a second over Houghton’s Laura Lucak. Dehlin had runs of 28.86 and 29.05 for a 57.91-second total compared to Lucak’s 58.92.

After Norway’s Hoy was third, Marquette’s filled in four of the next six places.

Sydney Kuhl was fourth in 1:00.51 on runs of 31.81 and 28.70, the latter the fastest GS time in either run.

Coxon was fifth in 1:00.68 with runs of 30.65 and 30.03, Croney seventh in 1:01.41 with runs of 30.63 and 30.78, and Starr ninth 1:03.02 with runs of 31.57 and 31.45.

Also for the Sentinels, Isaacson was 12th in 1:03.95 and Bernard 13th in 1:05.15.

Boys meet

The Marquette boys were nearly as dominating in the boys GS as the girls were in slalom, taking the first five places and nine of the top 10.

Benjamin Kuhl won this event by the slimmest of margins, six-hundredths of a second over teammate Conner Henry and 0.55 of a second over third-place Brady Audette.

Kuhl was consistent with the second-fastest time in each run with 27.91 and 27.26 seconds for a 55.17 total.

Henry, with the fastest second run, came in at 55.23 on runs of 28.13 and 27.10, while Audette had the fastest first run for 55.72 total on runs of 27.08 and 28.64.

Teammate Connor Dunn continued the Sentinels’ dominance in fourth in 57.12 on runs of 28.80 and 28.32, while Chase Dehlin was fifth in 58.11 on runs of 29.60 and 28.51.

After Ironwood’s Adam Everson was sixth, four more MSHS skiers filled in the rest of the top 10. Danny Starr was seventh in 58.80 on runs of 29.92 and 28.88, Jude Balding eighth in 59.27 on runs of 30.03 and 29.24, Ethan Dehlin ninth in 59.86 on runs of 30.06 and 29.80, and Sam Uchytil 10th in 1:00.17 on runs of 30.41 and 29.76.

Only by that comparison were the Marquette boys not so dominant in slalom, sweeping the top two places and “only” six of the top nine places.

Benjamin Kuhl again won after a dominating second run that was nearly a second ahead of the rest of the field. It made up for a fourth-fastest 38.51 opening run when he got downhill in 36.83 seconds in run No. 2 for a 1:15.34 total, just about a third of a second ahead of Audette, who finished in 1:15.67 on runs of 37.90 and 37.77.

Dunn was fifth in 1:18.82 on runs of 40.32 and 38.50, Balding sixth in 1:20.90 on runs of 40.79 and 40.11, Henry eighth in 1:24.59 on runs of 38.09 and 46.50 and Ethan Dehlin ninth in 1:25.18 on runs of 42.97 and 42.21.

Uchytil checked in at 14th in 1:34.46, Chase Dehlin 17th in 1:44.62 and Danny Starr 18th in 1:44.98.
