4 Sentinels skiers win events at Marquette Invite

MARQUETTE — A quartet of Marquette skiers claimed the top spots in four events across the boys and girls meets at the Marquette Invitational in high school alpine skiing held on Jan. 12 at Marquette Mountain.

The Sentinels swept to quite easy victories in both meets, scoring 26 points in both boys and girls meets.

The Norway boys were runners-up in their meet with 66 points, while Ironwood scored 84 and Houghton 122.

The Knights were also second in the girls meet with 71 as Houghton put up 103 and Ironwood 129.

Marquette was scheduled to ski at Pine Mountain on Monday, then go to Ironwood for a meet next Tuesday.

Here are details from last week’s meet:

Boys meet

In an unexpected turn that showed the Sentinels’ depth, the winner of one event wasn’t able to post a score in the other event for Marquette.

MSHS’ Lake Skytta won the giant slalom with a two-run combined time of 55.45 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of runner-up and teammate Benjamin Kuhl. Skytta had the only runs under 28 seconds in GS, 27.74 and 27.71.

Kuhl had runs of 28.30 and 28.08 for a 56.38 total, nearly a second ahead of third-place Logan Holm of Ironwood.

After the Red Devils’ Adam Everson took fourth place to pose a challenge for the Sentinels’ dominance, Marquette then took the next seven places to insure its team victory.

The Sentinels’ Connor Dunn was fifth with runs of 29.62 and 29.16 seconds for a 58.78 total, Brady Audette was sixth with 29.63 and 29.89 for 59.52, Danny Starr seventh with 30.01 and 29.55 for 59.56, Chase Dehlin eighth with 29.69 and 30.04 for 59.73, Jude Balding ninth with 30.12 and 29.77 for 59.89, Ethan Dehlin 10th with 31.19 and 30.60 for 1:01.79, and Sam Uchytil 11th with 31.10 and 31.25 for 1:02.35.

Conner Henry, who would win a close race for the slalom title, couldn’t finish his second GS run after the second-fastest opening-run time of 28.25 seconds.

Henry, though, posted a victory of nine-hundredths of a second over Kuhl for that slalom title, getting in runs of 37.23 and 36.87 for a 1:14.10 total.

Kuhl was the tough-luck two-time runner-up on this day, in slalom posting runs of 36.80 and 37.39 for 1:14.19.

After Ironwood’s Holm was third, Marquette took the next four places to insure its dominance. Audette was fourth in 1:16.53 with runs of 38.17 and 38.36, Dunn fifth in 1:16.77 with runs of 38.10 and 38.67, Chase Dehlin sixth in 1:20.94 with runs of 40.48 and 40.46, and Starr seventh in 1:22.08 with runs of 40.22 and 41.86.

In addition, the Sentinels’ Ethan Dehlin was 11th in 1:30.53 and Balding 18th in 2:16.30.

Skytta, the GS winner, didn’t get either slalom run in for no score, the same happening to Uchytil.

Girls meet

Marquette’s Estelle Dehlin and Sydney Kuhl each posted a victory and a third-place finish in the girls meet.

In GS, Kuhl dominated with a nearly 1.5-second victory, posting the two fastest runs of 29.09 and 28.91 for a 58.00-second total.

Houghton’s Laura Lucak was a distant runner-up in 59.38 seconds.

The Sentinels then occupied seven of the next 11 spots, including third, fourth and fifth.

From Marquette, Dehlin was third with runs of 29.47 and 30.05 for a 59.52 total, Madalyn Croney fourth with 30.40 and 30.86 to total 1:01.26, Sophie Coxon fifth with 30.81 and 31.14 for 1:01.95, Lyla Isaacson seventh with 32.06 and 31.57 for 1:03.63, Jillian Starr 10th with 31.95 and 32.57 for 1:04.52, Anna Bernard 12th with 31.81 and 33.31 for 1:05.12, and Armina Weinrick 13th with 32.19 and 32.99 for 1:05.18.

Additionally, the Sentinels’ Elin Betz was 18th in 1:09.24.

In slalom, Dehlin eked out a tight win by seven-hundredths of a second over Houghton’s Lucak. Dehlin had runs of 38.15 and 40.04 to total 1:18.19, while Lucak came down in 38.60 and 39.66 for 1:18.26.

Kuhl was almost as close in third place, barely more than a quarter-second after Lucak in 1:18.54 on runs of 38.29 and 40.25.

Marquette also grabbed the next four spots — Coxon fourth in 1:21.66 on runs of 40.37 and 41.29, Isaacson fifth in 1:24.71 on runs of 41.67 and 43.04, Starr sixth in 1:26.17 on runs of 41.70 and 44.47, and Croney seventh in 1:26.32 on runs of 42.48 and 43.84.

Bernard was ninth in 1:26.96, Weinrick 15th in 1:34.23 and Betz got one run in but no total score.
