Sentinels pull out swim victories over U.P. rivals

MARQUETTE — Marquette set the tone for its high school swimming and diving season with a home sweep of boys and girls triangular meets against two top contenders, Houghton and Sault Ste. Marie, on Saturday.

The Sentinels girls scored 133 points for a fairly comfortable victory as Houghton finished with 107 and the Soo 77.

On the other hand, the MSHS boys had a quite narrow victory over both foes, scoring an even 100 to 97 for the Gremlins and 91 for the Blue Devils.

“This is a big meet that usually sets the tone for the rest of the season, and (Saturday) did not disappoint,” Marquette head coach Nathan McFarren said in an email detailing the result.

“The Marquette girls dominated almost every event. However, on the boys side it was a battle, with a nine-point difference between first and third. That is a very tight team score difference in swimming.

“We are gonna need to tighten up a few things, but that is normal for this time of the year. The goal is to go into (the Upper Peninsula) finals (in February) more streamlined than we are now. I am very pleased with many swims … as well as our performances on the diving board.”

He also noted that one of his swimmers, Logan McFarren, earned a recent MSHS Athlete of the Month award.

She and two of her teammates were four-time winners on Saturday.

McFarren won the individual 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, while girls teammate Kaytlin Roell took the 50 free and 500 free as each was also on the victorious 200 and 400 free relays.

For the boys, Marquette’s Gavin Mills won the 50 free, 100 butterfly and swam with the triumphant 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Boys’ teammate Josiah Youngren won three times, taking the 100 free, 100 breaststroke and swam with the 200 medley relay victors.

Another five swimmers were double winners.

For the girls, Sophie Hausmann won the diving and Edith Jentoft the 100 fly as each were on the 200 free relay winners, while Hailee LaCombe took the 100 backstroke and was on the victorious 400 free relay.

Among the boys, Lucas Deiter won the 100 back as he and Jack Pozega were both on the winning 400 free relay. Pozega was also on the triumphant 200 medley relay.

The Sentinels have one more meet before the Christmas holidays, hosting Kingsford at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
