Sentinels eke out swimming sweep of Kingsford
MARQUETTE — The teams split their victories almost right down the middle, but Marquette had a just a few extra strokes left in the tank — or maybe in the pool — to barely pull out a sweep over visiting Kingsford at a high school swimming and diving meet held Thursday afternoon at the MSHS pool.
The Sentinels girls won seven of 12 events — two of three relays and five of nine individual races — to score a 94-88 victory, while the MSHS boys split right down the middle, taking six of 12 events for an 81-68 triumph over their guests.
“What a great meet against the … Flivvers (on) Thursday on the boys and girls sides,” Marquette head coach Nate McFarren said in an email detailing the result. “The Marquette squads battled to two close victories, because of several great swims.
“We knew that Kingsford was going to be strong again on both sides. I think (we) will continue to have some great competition all the way through the (MHSAA Upper Peninsula) Finals.”
While there were a handful of double winners, just one Sentinels’ swimmer emerged as a four-time victor and another as a three-time first-place finisher.
Logan McFarren from the girls team won all four of her events, taking the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke while swimming with Marquette’s victorious 200 and 400 free relays.
From the boys team, Gavin Mills tripled up his triumphs, taking the 100 free and joining his teammates in winning the 200 and 400 free relays.
Doubling up for the MSHS girls was Sophie Hausmann in the diving, Kaytlin Roell in the 100 butterfly and Loralei Maki in the 100 free as Hausmann was also with the 400 free relay and Roell and Maki with the 200 free relay.
In addition, girls teammate Lilliana Fogaroli was a winner in both relays, while Edith Jentoft swam a leg in the victorious 400 relay.
For the Marquette boys, Beau Deiter won the 200 free and Cade Kruhak the 500 free as Deiter was also with the winning 400 free relay and Kruhak the 200 free relay.
In addition, Lucas Deiter and Josiah Youngren were on both those winning relays, while teammate Wyatt Ansell won the diving.
The Sentinels take the Christmas and New Year’s holidays off before returning to the MSHS pool for a meet against Rudyard at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
That same day, Negaunee will host a triangular against Manistique and Houghton, then the two home teams from those meets — Marquette and the Miners — square off at the Sentinels’ pool at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9.
