I-N bowler Harvey breaks loose for 273 at UPBC opener
MARQUETTE — Ishpeming-Negaunee bowler Sara Harvey outshone every other boy and girl competitor on Saturday at Superior Lanes in Marquette, rolling a huge 273 game as the I-N teams swept all three of their matches on the opening day of the Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference season.
Harvey, a senior, also rolled a 201 game during the individual bowling part of her match.
UPBC teams face off in 40-point matches, mixing in both Baker-style bowling and “regular” bowling to come up with their point totals. Baker games alternate bowlers each frame to come up with a single-game score, while “regular” bowling has each bowler roll his or her own 10-frame game.
Each match includes six Baker games for the team and three regular games for each of five bowlers.
There were two shifts of bowling Saturday at the Marquette center, and in the first shift, I-N rolled against L’Anse in boys, girls and X (extra bowlers) matches, the I-N boys winning 37-3, I-N girls 30-10 and I-N X winning 40-0.
In addition, Iron Mountain also swept Escanaba, the IM girls winning 37-3 and boys 27-13. Also that shift, Marquette X downed one of the Westwood X teams, 36-4.
In the first shift, I-N boys junior Killian Ryan rolled games of 247 and 243, while L’Anse girls junior Willow Rexford had a 214. And the I-N boys team had a 222 Baker game.
During the second shift, while the top games weren’t as high as the first shift, there were more of them, at least for the boys.
Marquette senior Desmond Gleason led all bowlers with 234 and 224 games, while also for the Sentinels boys, senior Daniel Gramprie shot 214, senior TJ Davis 210, senior Nick Lyons 206 and junior Sean Buckmaster 205.
From Westwood, junior Camden Grover hit 231 and senior Johnny Jestila 223.
Top Baker games were turned in by the Westwood boys with 233 and 212 as the Marquette boys had 221, 212 and 201.
The Marquette boys defeated Westwood 31-9, while the Patriots girls upended the Sentinels 37-3. The Marquette X team held off Westwood “A” X 25-15.
Westwood “B” X knocked off Calumet X 36-4, while the Calumet boys downed Menominee 35-5 and Menominee girls won by forfeit over Calumet.
