Delmont leads Gwinn, Waterman paces Miners
MANISTIQUE — Makayla Delmont scored 19 points to lead the Gwinn High School girls basketball team to their second win in two outings in this early season with a 40-29 victory at Manistique on Monday night.
Delmont did the lion’s share of her scoring in the first half, putting in 15 points that included a pair of 3-pointers, as the Modeltowners built a 24-14 halftime lead.
“We were happy again with our defensive performance and defending without fouling,” Gwinn head coach Adam Ely said in an email detailing the result. “To only put a team on the line twice and only foul five times all game is something good we can point to.
“Offense for us remains a work in progress with turnovers and having intent to our possessions.”
He was also alluding to the Modeltowners’ opening 38-32 victory at Houghton on Dec. 9.
Adeline Derwin and Alayna Soyring added eight points apiece to the winning effort, Derwin getting six points in the opening half and Soyring five after halftime as she hit a triple each half.
Makenna Davis and Allie Davis paced the Emeralds (0-2) with eight points each.
Free throws were at a premium for both teams, with Manistique making just 2 of 4 and Gwinn only 1 of 3.
The Modeltowners led 13-4 after one quarter before moving its advantage to 10 points at halftime, then bumped it to 36-21 after three quarters before the Emeralds cut into the advantage a bit in the final period.
After playing a game at Munising on Wednesday night, Gwinn doesn’t play again until Tuesday, Dec. 30, with its first home game of the season against Jeffers at 6 p.m.
Manistique hosts Newberry at 7:15 p.m. today, then doesn’t go again until Jan. 5 when the Emeralds are at Engadine.
Negaunee 54, Calumet 34
On Monday at Negaunee, balanced scoring with eight players making at least one basket keyed the Miners to their third win without a loss.
Keira Waterman led Negaunee with 12 points and nine rebounds, while teammate Gretel Johnson scored 11 points and added five assists.
“This was a very physical, scrappy game … which it always is with Calumet,” Miners head coach Mike O’Donnell said in an email detailing the result. “Our scoring is coming from a lot of different places early in the season, which is a good sign.
“We’re still working through things and need to clean up a lot, but our effort is there and that’s the most important thing.”
Aleana Park added nine points for the winners, while Clare O’Donnell had eight along with nine rebounds.
Free throws went a long way to determining the winner, as Negaunee hit 19 of 28 (68%) while the Copper Kings were just 4 of 6 (67%).
Waterman made 6 of 10 and Park 4 of 6 at the line.
Jess Anderson led Calumet (1-2) with 11 points, while Bailey Strom had 10.
The Miners used a big second quarter to erase Calumet’s 11-10 edge after one period to go ahead 23-14 at halftime.
They parlayed that into a 35-20 advantage after three quarters before pumping in another 19 points in the final period.
Negaunee hosts Westwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday as the second half of a boys-girls doubleheader with the boys game vs. the Patriots at 6 p.m.
The Miners girls then return to action at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, to host the opening round of the Irontown Holiday Bash against Kingsford.
