The Sentinels had quite a few awards, including multiple major awards.
Marquette was named the Division 1 Team of the Year for both its boys and girls squads, while L’Anse and Newberry shared the Division 3 girls honor.
MSHS coaches Kyle Detmers and Mike Leannes were named the Division 1 Coach of the Year, while four Sentinels were named to the All-U.P. Dream Team between their girls and boys runners.
They included Ella Fure on the girls side and Rorik Holmquist, Peter Argeropoulos and Lucas Ballard among boys.

Also joining that elite group was Negaunee’s Henry Plummer for the boys, while Newberry’s Molly McNamara earned girls’ Dream Team Honorable Mention.
Each of those Dream Team runners also earned All-State honors in their respective divisions, the Marquette and Negaunee runners in Division 1 and Newberry’s in Division 3.
But that was just the tip of iceberg for area award winners. Fourteen area boys were named All-State, with another five making All-U.P., and for the girls, 16 got All-State awards with another five making All-U.P.
Joining the Dream Teamers making Division 1 boys All-State from the area were Simon Jaklin of Negaunee; Jared Waterman of Westwood; and Beepsee Teeple, Luke Skytta and Garrett Crimmins of Marquette.
All-State Division 2 boys are Blake Lakosky of Munising, and Kavin Jackson of Manistique, while joining the All-State group in Division 3 are Kemper Gearhart and Mateusz Wozniak of Ishpeming along with Julian Suriano of Newberry.

In addition to Dream Teamer Fure, girls All-State runners from the area in Division 1 are Keira Waterman of Negaunee and the rest of the “E-Train” from Marquette — Emma Ziegler, Evelyn Grant, Esme Ulland-Joy and Eryn Veverka, as each of those Sentinels runners’ first names begins with the letter “E.”
Division 2 area runners getting All-State are Addie Bowerman and Olivia Cotey of Munising; while in Division 3, in addition to Newberry’s McNamara, it’s Sophie Mahoski of Ishpeming; Samantha Taylor and Abby Taylor of Newberry; and Lily Froese, Kwynn Voskuhl, Princess Pierre and Aaliyah Maki of L’Anse.
All-U.P. honors for Division 1 boys go to Calvin Carlson of Westwood and Welly Fillmore of Marquette. Division 2 was Dylan Krause of Munising, while in Division 3 it’s Cole Ozoga of Superior Central and Kellan Bruno of Newberry.
All-U.P. awards for the girls go to Division 1’s Ava Cantway of Marquette, along with Brynn Wiecich and Nori Korsman of Negaunee, Division 2’s Zoey Kidd of Munising, and Division 3’s Aybri Sorenson of Baraga.
Major awards were shared by other areas of the U.P., too.
Rudyard was named the girls’ Division 2 Team of the Year, while the same honor for the boys went to Jeffers in Division 2 and Forest Park in Division 3.
Houghton’s Traci Welch also shared in the Coach of the Year honor in Division 1, while Rudyard’s Mike Kirschner won it in Division 2 and Forest Park’s DJ Rasner in Division 3.
Sault Ste. Marie’s Gabe Litzner was named Boys Runner of the Year, while Pickford’s Talya Schreiber earned Girls Runner of the Year.
Each of those runners also headed up their respective All-U.P. Dream Team, which also includes Cameron Anderson of Jeffers and Shea Armstrong of the Soo for the boys, and Maria Murvich of Kingsford and Holly Cooke of Houghton for the girls.
Making All-U.P. Dream Honorable Mention were Cedarville’s Ethan Snyder for the boys and Ewen-Trout Creek’s Bree Besonen for the girls.
