MARQUETTE — Led by two-time honoree Ford Richardson, Marquette earned 11 honors when the Big North Conference chose its football postseason awards recently.

Richardson, a senior, earned First Team honors as a defensive back and Second Team as quarterback.

He was one of seven Sentinels who earned First Team laurels, the highest honor the league gives out.

Junior Clayton Edwards joined Richardson as a First Team defensive back, while also on defense, MSHS junior Rocky Sholl made First Team as a lineman.

On offense, four Sentinels seniors earned First Team awards — Pierce Pittsley as a wide receiver, James Goodwin as a running back and Pavel McCutcheon and Bjorn Anderson as linemen.

Marquette’s only Second Team honor besides Richardson at QB was senior Haylan McCollum as a back on defense.

In addition, Sentinels senior Grant Simon made Special Mention as a running back, while junior Braylon Zdunek earned Honorable Mention as a wide receiver.

Marquette finished its season with a 6-4 record, ending with a narrow 38-34 loss to Big North champion Gaylord in the opening round of the MHSAA Division 3 playoffs.

The Sentinels were 4-2 in league games, finishing third.

The Upper Peninsula’s other two teams in the seven-team conference, Escanaba and Sault Ste. Marie, also had players honored. There were a total of 12 honors handed out to the Eskymos, who were league runners-up at 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big North, while the Blue Devils had just three honorees after an 0-9 and 0-6 campaign.
