Fure, Argeropoulos run away and hide for Sentinels

MARQUETTE — Seniors Ella Fure and Peter Argeropoulos put together dominant races to not only win their races at the Great Northern Conference meet in high school cross country, but lead Marquette to a sweep of the team titles at Presque Isle Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Sentinels girls scored a near-perfect 18 points to fly by the only other school with a full team, Kingsford, which had 44 points.

In the boys meet, MSHS also approached perfection with 19 points as runner-up Gladstone had 56. Kingsford followed with 79 and Escanaba had 95.

Area schools will join the rest of the Upper Peninsula at the MHSAA U.P. Finals in three divisions — meaning six total races — next Saturday morning at Pictured Rocks Golf Club in Munising.

Here are details from each GNC meet:

Girls meet

Fure won the girls title my nearly two full minutes, clocking 18 minutes, 53.9 seconds as runner-up and freshman teammate Emma Ziegler put together a personal-record time of 20:41.3.

Kingsford’s Maria Murvich snuck into third in 21:02.8 and Menominee’s Winley Brandt fourth in 21:42.9 before another four Sentinels grabbed the each of the next places.

MSHS senior Esme Ulland-Joy was fifth in 22:15.8, freshman Ava Cantway sixth in 22:38.4, freshman Amira Perrier seventh in 22:40.7 and sophomore Olivia Koren eighth in 22:43.6.

In addition, the seventh Marquette runner also cracked the top 10 of this race with 22 entrants as sophomore Evelyn Grant was 10th in 23:20.2.

Boys meet

Just like his senior classmate Fure, Argeropoulos won in a runaway in the boys meet in 16:31.6, more than 90 seconds ahead of runner-up Cavan Mulligan of Kingsford in 18:03.9.

Marquette then slotted into the next five positions, all who just happened to be sophomores, to run off with the team title.

That group was led by Lake Skytta, third in 18:11.1; then came Garrett Crimmins, fourth in 18:38.2; Welly Fillmore, fifth in 18:50.9; DJ Menhennick, sixth in 19:00.6; and William Lindsay, seventh in 19:00.7.

Marquette’s final runner had a pretty solid finish, too, as senior Beepsee Teeple was 12th in a 27-runner field in 19:32.8.
