Emeralds snap Sentinels’ volleyball win streak
MANISTIQUE — Marquette saw its winning streak snapped when Manistique posted a three-set victory at the Emeralds gym in a high school volleyball match played Thursday.
Manistique prevailed 25-22, 25-18, 25-10 to improve to 11-7-3.
The Emeralds had been voted into the Upper Peninsula top five in Divisions 1-3 last week before several losses knocked them from that perch. Voting is conducted by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
The Sentinels slipped to 9-10-1 after wins two weeks ago against Gladstone and Menominee and a trio of two-set wins without a loss at its own Marquette Invitational last Saturday.
“(We) started strong as a team, successfully implementing our goals early in the match,” MSHS head coach Melissa Butler said in an email detailing the victory. “However, we struggled to maintain that momentum throughout the (match), which ultimately led to a loss.
“This match is a reminder of the importance of staying consistent and connected as a team from start to finish.”
With just two weeks left in the regular season, Marquette tries to right itself at the Clash of the Divisions tournament at Kingsford today. As its name suggests, the Sentinels will take on three of the U.P.’s strongest teams — D 1-3 No. 1 Kingsford, D 1-3 No. 2 Calumet and Division 4 No. 1 Forest Park.
The Sentinels also host Gladstone on Tuesday evening and travel to Kingsford for a regular-season match on Thursday.
Manistique is at the Inland Lakes Invitational today, taking on Alpena, Bellaire and host Indian River, before squaring off at home vs. Menominee on Tuesday evening and traveling to Cheboygan on Thursday.
