Calumet upends Sentinels volleyball in 3 sets

MARQUETTE — Marquette couldn’t overcome yet another Upper Peninsula top-five team on its volleyball schedule on Thursday, losing at home to Division 1-3 No. 3 Calumet in three sets.

The Copper Kings prevailed 25-21, 25-12, 25-23 to improve to 12-9-1 as the Sentinels slipped to 4-9.

This was Marquette’s fifth match against a current top-five team in Division 1-3, along with three matches against Lower Peninsula schools early in the season.

“Marquette put up a strong battle against a tough Calumet team,” MSHS head coach Melissa Butler said in an email detailing the result. “Our blocking was a highlight and proved critical throughout the match.

“While we fell short on the scoreboard, we continue to make strides in communication and consistency. This match marked another significant step forward in our team’s growth, showcasing progress in our collective competitiveness.”

Marquette has a busy week on the court, playing at Gladstone at 7 p.m. Tuesday and home against Menominee at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Then MSHS hosts the Sentinel Invitational next Saturday morning and is scheduled to play at least four opponents that day.
