MARQUETTE — Two powerful programs from Marquette County in 11-player and Luce County’s representative in eight-player cracked the top-five listings in the first Upper Peninsula high school football poll conducted by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Released on Wednesday this week and set to be announced on Tuesdays in subsequent weeks, Negaunee received one of the five first-place votes but only garnered the No. 3 position in 11-player.

There were five 2-0 teams that were ranked or received votes, including the top four.

Escanaba earned the narrowest of margins as No. 1 in 11-player, getting two first-place votes and 22 total voting points, while Menominee was a close No. 2, also with a pair of first-place votes but 21 voting points.
