Sentinels girls tennis wins at Escanaba

ESCANABA — The Marquette Senior High School girls tennis team bounced back from a pair of recent losses to take a 5-3 road victory at Escanaba on Tuesday.

“(Tuesday) was a good rebound day,” Sentinels head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the result. “I was really happy that our compete level we had (Monday) against Westwood continued (in this match).

“We have had quite a few practices rained out this year, so weather permitting, it will be nice to get some practice time (from Wednesday through today).”

A key to getting the win was not only Marquette winning three of four singles matches, but the Sentinels also taking two of three extended, three-set encounters.

On the winning side for Marquette, Eva Dewitt and Charlye Swajanen lost a marathon first-set tiebreaker before bouncing back to defeat Escanaba’s Claire Jacobsen and Hailee Cloutier, 6-7 (9-11), 6-4, 6-1.

“Eva Dewitt and Charlye Swajanen did a good of grinding out the key points in the second set and made some nice adjustments to what the Esky girls were doing to help them capture the third set,” Thomsen said. “The way they played the last half of the match is what we are looking for in the upcoming weeks.”

The Marquette coach was also pleased with No. 2 singles player Nora Skytta, who came back decisively for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over the Eskymos’ Olivia Vogel.

“Nora Skytta had a nice three-set victory at No. 2 singles,” Thomsen said. “What was super impressive about Nora’s match was the fact she gave something new a try in the first set, realized it wasn’t quite working, and settled in to her tenacious play for the last two sets.”

The Eskymos turned the tables at No. 2 doubles, where Sophie Hill and Isabelle Noblet took down the Sentinels’ Kylie Smith and Logan McFarren, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Marquette had another busy schedule next week, hosting Negaunee on Monday, going to Westwood on Wednesday and entertaining Menominee on Thursday.
