MARQUETTE — Runners from Negaunee not only won individual races but led their respective teams to titles at the WIN Meet held in high school cross country at the Negaunee Township Trails on Thursday afternoon.

Miners senior Nori Korsman won the girls meet by more than a minute and a half, while fellow Negaunee senior Henry Plummer took the boys title by not quite 40 seconds.

Westwood gave the Miners a battle for both team championships, particularly in the boys meet, but Negaunee held on as Ishpeming didn’t field a full team in either meet.

For the boys, the Miners scored 27 points to 28 for the Patriots, while in the girls competition, Negaunee scored 23 as Westwood had 32.

“I am extremely proud of the way both our girls and boys teams performed,” Miners head coach Vickie Paupore said in an email. “The girls have been running solid times all season and Nori Korsman had another great race.

The eight medalists in the girls race at the WIN Meet in high school cross country are, from left in order from first to eighth place, Nori Korsman of Negaunee, Addy Hallum of Westwood, Sophie Mahoski of Ishpeming, Riley Conklin and Adela Miller of Negaunee, Elizabeth King of Westwood, Maija Roberts of Negaunee and Oni Heinzel of Westwood. “Our boys have been battling with Westwood’s boys all season long. The Westwood boys are a strong team and they have beaten us a number of times by just a few points.

“(Thursday) was the first time our boys were able to defeat them and I was so proud of the heart that they ran with.

“Our top two boys, Henry and Simon (Jaklin) had excellent races. They are really bringing their times down and having each other to run (against), which is beneficial to both of them.”

WIN meets are held in a number of sports throughout the school year, with “WIN” standing for the three western Marquette County schools involved — Westwood, Ishpeming and Negaunee.

Korsman finished the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 21 minutes, 27.3 seconds, well ahead of girls runner-up Addy Hallum of Westwood, also a senior, who came in at 23:09.3.
