Palomaki kind of days: Siblings take part, finish well at mountain biking nat’ls

MARQUETTE — Three young siblings from Marquette placed at the Endurance Mountain Bike National Championships that were held in Roanoke, Virginia, in mid-July.

They were joined by three young adult racers also from Marquette at this meet.

Silvia Palomaki, 11, won a national title there in her age division, while sister Stella Palomaki, 9, also won a nonchampionship race in her younger division.

And their brother, Fischer Palomaki, 13, picked up a pair of top-40 finishes in his own division.

Among their coaches are their parents, Matt and Angela Palomaki, as they all are members of the SISU Cycles Factory Racing team.

Additionally, three past Marquette Senior High School mountain bike racers also had several high finishes at the same event.

Palomakis ride high

Silvia Palomaki, won the junior female 11-12-year-old division in cross-country Olympic racing on July 18, a USA Cycling mountain biking national championship. She also placed 16th in the junior female 11-14 open division for short track on July 16, a competition where she was the youngest racer.

With national championships not starting until age 11, Stella Palomaki still won the July 20 junior female open 9-10 title in cross-country Olympic, while four days earlier, placed fourth in the female 18-under finals of short track.

Fischer Palomaki placed 31st in the junior male 11-14 open division of short track on July 16, then took 38th in the junior male 13-14 division of cross-country Olympic on July 18.

The siblings each practice and train on area NTN and North mountain bike trails, also participating in Marquette BMX races, and have even raced at Wisconsin Off-Road Series mountain bike events this spring and summer.

The girls have won every Wisconsin race they’ve entered, while Fischer has been a podium finisher in each.

Ex-Sentinels compete

Competing on the Broken Spoke Racing team, Sam Paternoster finished 11th in the women’s under-23 open short track division on July 17, then finished 12th in the national championship cross country Olympic women’s U23 open division on July 19.

A member of the Broken Spoke Devo team, Ian Kangas was 43rd in the men’s U23 P/1 division of short track on July 17, then came in 49th in the men’s U23 P/1 division of cross country Olympic on July 19.

Also on the Broken Spoke Devo team, Andrew Kangas was listed in the same races but in the junior male 17-18 division, though his name couldn’t be found in the standings.
