Michigan-Wisconsin tennis in early August

MARQUETTE — The 78th annual Michigan-Wisconsin Tennis Open tournament will be held at several courts in the Escanaba area during the first weekend of August.

Tourney headquarters will be at the Ludington Park courts near Lake Michigan, with courts also scheduled to be employed at Escanaba High School, Royce Park and Veterans Park.

This fundraiser for the Eskymos high school programs will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2-3, with singles held the first day and doubles the second.

Divisions scheduled are men’s, women’s and youth singles and doubles, with them further broken down into “A” and “B” divisions for adults and age groups for both youth and adults, along with possible mixed doubles, depending on the number of entries, according to tourney organizer and EHS boys tennis coach Tom Penegor.

He also pointed out one of the few remaining tennis tourneys in the Upper Peninsula takes place just a few weeks before the opening of the high school girls tennis season.

Entry deadline to receive a T-shirt is Monday, July 28.

Check-in each day will be at 8 a.m. at Ludington Park, with schedules posted there. Players must also provide one can of Wilson or Penn tennis balls per event entered, with awards given to the top two finishers in each division.

Cost is $25 per singles entry and $15 per doubles player, a T-shirt included in the fee if registered by July 28.

A tournament registration form is available online at www.escanaba.org/media/26851.

Checks made out to Esky Tennis can be mailed to Escanaba Recreation Department, Attn: MI-WI Tennis, P.O. Box 948, Escanaba, MI 49829.
