Sentinels baseball season ends in districts

TRAVERSE CITY — Marquette’s high school baseball season came to an end at the MHSAA Division 1 district tournament on Saturday when the Sentinels faced Traverse City West at nearby TC Central’s home field and won 10-0 in the tourney semifinals.

The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule with the Titans scoring two runs in the second inning and putting away the result with an eight-run third.

Cameron Stoops hit an RBI single in the second, while in the big rally in the third, Caden Stoops cracked a bases-clearing double as West needed just five hits to score the eight runs, also aided by Marquette committing six errors throughout the game.

Alex Brennan started on the mound and went three innings for the Sentinels, allowing 10 runs — but only four earned — on eight hits as the lefthander walked three and struck out three.

Aidan Mason also pitched one inning for MSHS, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk as he fanned one.

Brayden Popa went the distance for the Titans, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks as he K’d six.

Marquette’s two hits, both singles, were collected by Ian Sheltrow and Jacob Geller as the Sentinels finish their season at 8-8.

Caden Stoops and Calum Collins each had two hits, including a double, for TC West.

In the other district semifinal on Saturday, TC Central defeated Mount Pleasant 9-1, and in the finals, TC West blanked TC Central 2-0.

The Titans advanced to Wednesday’s regional semifinal back at the TC Central field against Bay City Western, with either Grand Rapids Northview or Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills awaiting in Saturday’s regional final.
